Isolating a note: the pucker

The principle comes down to a simple image: the mouth purses into a small circle, a bit like getting ready to whistle, so that air can only pass through a single opening, exactly wide enough for one hole of the harmonica.
The most reliable way to get there isn't to purse the lips tightly from the very first second, an almost universal beginner mistake. The reference methods, starting with Winslow Yerxa's manual, which has become a standard of the genre, teach the reverse order: start with the mouth wide open and relaxed, place the harmonica between the lips at the level of the corners of the mouth, then gradually narrow the opening until only one hole is left clear, rather than trying to aim small from the outset. That direction of narrowing, from wide to narrow, is exactly what avoids the tension that keeps most beginners from nailing this technique on the first try.
This tension is worth naming precisely, since it comes up from one method to the next as the number-one source of early difficulties: tension in the lips and jaw. A tense mouth shifts slightly with every breath, which drifts the embouchure from one hole to the next in the middle of a note, whereas a relaxed mouth keeps its shape still throughout the breath. The body of the tongue, laid flat against the instrument, blocks the unwanted holes, most often the ones to the left of the mouth, leaving only the one that stays clear on the right edge of the covered area free to sound.
This technique has long been, and still is today, the norm rather than the exception in electric blues: nearly all the harmonica players who defined the style, John Lee Williamson, Rice Miller, Little Walter, Walter Horton, George Smith and James Cotton, played tongue blocking most of the time, a habit later passed down to the next generation of specialists in the genre. Jazz and chromatic playing split differently: Toots Thielemans built the bulk of his playing on the pucker, William Galison is identified with tongue blocking, and Larry Adler switched between the two depending on the passage at hand, proof that neither technique is reserved for a single style.
Jerry Portnoy's own story, a harmonica player who backed Muddy Waters before joining Eric Clapton's band and who went on to build one of the most widely used teaching methods on this subject, shows clearly that the choice is never set in stone: he played exclusively tongue blocking for close to ten years before coming back to the pucker, once certain effects that call for a free tongue, like fast articulations, became necessary to his playing. Today he uses both, depending on the sound he's after rather than out of fixed habit. Tongue blocking generally takes a little longer than a well-set pucker to produce a truly clean note, because it coordinates more elements at once: the opening of the mouth, the position of the tongue and the breath. By far the most common cause is an opening that's still too wide: whether that's the lip opening in a pucker, or the space left open by the tongue in tongue blocking, it only takes one neighbouring hole staying clear for its reed to vibrate too and thicken the sound. A classic teaching trick, used in most methods for absolute beginners, trains the ear to recognise what a truly isolated note should sound like before you can even reproduce it unaided: cover the holes next to the one you're trying to isolate with a finger, blow or draw normally to memorise that reference sound, then remove the finger while trying to keep exactly the same mouth shape as when the finger was in place. The harmonica shares with most wind instruments the need for controlled breathing, but it differs on one point that really changes things for a beginner: almost every other wind instrument, flute, saxophone, trumpet, only produces sound on the exhale, which lets playing follow the natural pattern of a big inhale followed by one long controlled breath out. This quirk explains why so many beginners feel slightly light-headed or short of breath within the first few minutes of practice, a symptom that's almost always tied to shallow breathing high in the chest rather than to any lack of physical fitness. Chest breathing, in small quick puffs that lift the shoulders, works fine for a short phrase but leaves you out of breath quickly over a whole song, with a real risk of hyperventilation that comes specifically from the instrument's two-way nature.
Diaphragmatic breathing fixes this problem at the root. You can check the principle sitting or standing, back straight, one hand on the belly and one on the chest: on the inhale, it's the belly that should rise under your hand, not the shoulders lifting. A first exercise is built on three or four adjacent holes, all played on the blow only, moving one hole to the right and then back to the left, with each note clearly separated from the next by a tiny silence rather than run together without a breath. Slowness matters more than speed here: four perfectly clean notes in ten seconds beat eight blurry ones in the same time. A second exercise stays on a single hole but alternates blow and draw, blow, draw, blow, draw, keeping the mouth in strictly the same position throughout: that's exactly the coordination any melody will later demand, since changing note and changing breath direction are two moves that sometimes have to happen together.

After every session: condensation, drying, the habit that protects the reeds
A harmonica that's been played for a few minutes almost always comes out slightly damp inside, and that's not a sign of poor care but a perfectly normal physical phenomenon. Exhaled breath is warm and moisture-laden; the metal reeds, meanwhile, stay noticeably cooler, especially early in a session. That temperature difference condenses some of the breath's water vapour on contact with the metal, exactly the way a cold windowpane fogs up on contact with a heated room.
If that moisture stays in place too long, it's not harmless for the instrument. It speeds up corrosion of the reeds and the metal cover plates, which rust faster under repeated cycles of damp and dry than if they stayed dry the whole time; on a wooden comb, that same moisture soaks into the material and can make it swell, a phenomenon covered in detail in the next section. Nothing about a single session is irreversible, but letting it build up, session after session, without a single bit of care, is genuinely the surest way to prematurely wear out an otherwise good-quality harmonica.
The routine officially recommended by Hohner, one of the oldest manufacturers still in business, takes just a few seconds: tap the harmonica's openings face-down into the palm of your own hand right after playing, to shake out most of the condensation, wipe the plates with a soft cloth, then let the instrument finish drying in the open air, at room temperature and away from direct heat, before putting it back in its case. This routine has one notable exception the manufacturer flags itself: on its lowest-pitched reed models, it explicitly advises against tapping the instrument, since an impact could throw those more fragile reeds out of alignment, and recommends sticking to air-drying alone for those.

One last adjustment, especially useful in winter or in a cold room, reduces the amount of condensation produced in the first place rather than dealing with it afterward: bringing the harmonica's temperature closer to that of your mouth before you start playing, for instance by keeping it in an inside pocket for a few minutes, limits the temperature gap that condensation comes from in the first place. The smaller the gap, the less moisture there is to wipe away afterward.
Cleaning, hygiene and long-term storage
Moisture doesn't act the same way on every harmonica, and understanding why sheds light on a good deal of today's manufacturing choices. The pearwood comb of traditional harmonicas, popularised by Hohner's Marine Band models, has long caused a recurring problem: saliva and breath moisture, absorbed over and over by untreated wood, eventually swell the dividers between the holes. That swelling tightens the space between the wood and the reed plates, which can make the instrument leakier, less responsive, and sometimes even uncomfortable on the lips if the dividers push slightly out of their original alignment.
Manufacturers have answered this problem in different ways rather than with a single fix. Hohner eventually started sealing its more recent wooden combs, notably with a laminated bamboo comb on modern versions of the Marine Band, a material treated to repel water rather than absorb it, which makes it far more stable over time than untreated wood. Another line from the same brand, the Special 20, sidesteps the problem differently by replacing the wood entirely with an ABS plastic comb, which never swells or shrinks, for a more affordable price and a moisture tolerance that's much more forgiving for a beginner still learning to manage their own saliva production while playing. Lee Oskar, another well-known manufacturer, built its entire range on this same principle of a virtually indestructible plastic comb, with an extra argument for long-term upkeep: its reed plates are replaceable separately, held by three small screws, which means you can replace just the worn part the day a reed gives out instead of buying a whole new instrument.
Beyond the choice of model, a few simple hygiene rules apply to any harmonica. Rinse your mouth before playing, avoid playing right after a meal, and never lend or share your own harmonica the way you might share a guitar, since it's precisely one of the only common instruments that touches the inside of the mouth directly on every note. Unlike a guitar or a piano, a harmonica also shouldn't be cleaned by running it under water as a matter of course: Hohner explicitly advises against soaking its wooden-comb models, with only certain plastic-comb models tolerating a gentle rinse in lukewarm water when genuinely needed.
For storage between sessions, aiming for moderate ambient humidity, roughly between 40 and 60 percent, protects against both the mould that lurks above that threshold and the drying-out that cracks a wooden comb below it. A small silica gel packet tucked into the case helps stabilise that humidity in a particularly damp house, provided it's swapped out roughly every two to three months: a saturated packet stops absorbing anything and only protects the instrument in appearance from then on. None of these habits belong to some perfectionism reserved for high-end instruments: tapping it out, air-drying it and keeping an eye on storage humidity are exactly what separates a first harmonica that's still perfectly airtight a year later from one that's gone wheezy on two or three holes for lack of that handful of seconds of attention after every session.
