Reading sheet music: the clefs, the staff and note values
The staff: five lines, four spaces, and why that exact number
This guide is about reading sheet music, the notation that gives both an exact pitch and an exact duration for every note. If the goal is instead to read a chord chart, which simply names the chord to play without showing where to place it on an instrument, another Music Hub guide covers that in detail, along with the full comparison between sheet music, chord charts and tab, technique symbols included; there's no need to go over that ground again here. This guide assumes the goal really is decoding the staff itself, from the first landmark all the way to counting out a full bar.
A staff is a grid of five parallel horizontal lines and the four spaces between them; a note is read either sitting on a line or nestled in a space, never anywhere else in between. That number, five lines, is neither arbitrary nor eternal: it's the end point of a long process of reduction. The Italian Benedictine monk Guido of Arezzo, already encountered elsewhere for his role in naming the notes, formalised, around 1025-1026, in his treatise Micrologus, a four-line staff meant to put monophonic Gregorian chant into writing, a single melodic line that until then had been passed down almost entirely by memory and by ear. That four-line staff was enough for a single voice singing an unaccompanied melody; it became inadequate as polyphony, several voices sung together, developed over the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and demanded a wider range be covered without constantly resorting to lines added above or below. A fifth line was therefore added gradually from the thirteenth century onward, unevenly at first from one copyist to the next, before the five-line staff established itself as the near-universal standard of Western music. Its final stabilisation owes a great deal to the arrival of music printing in the sixteenth century: a template engraved once and for all into a metal punch, reproduced identically across hundreds of copies, no longer tolerates the layout variations of one manuscript copyist to the next, which is what locked the five-line staff into the reproducible, stable format still used today.
That number, five lines, nonetheless remains a compromise rather than an absolute limit: as soon as a melody moves outside the register covered by the five lines and four spaces, the staff extends with ledger lines, short line segments added just above or just below the staff, one per note that overflows, as far as needed into the high or low register. Middle C on the piano, often the very first ledger-line note a beginner learns to spot, is written on a single ledger line placed just above the staff in bass clef or just below the staff in treble clef, exactly halfway between the two staves of the grand staff.
The treble clef: what it fixes and where its shape comes from
A bare staff, with no clef, means nothing: the same five lines and four spaces could represent any register at all until some landmark fixes the pitch of at least one line. The treble clef, the most widely used for high-register instruments and voices, such as the violin, the piano's right hand, the guitar or a soprano voice, curls around the second line from the bottom and fixes on that exact line the note G just above middle C on the piano. Once that single line is fixed, every other line and space on the staff can be worked out automatically from it, one step at a time, by simple stepwise motion up or down.
The shape of the sign itself is not some graphic ornament chosen at random: it descends directly from the letter G, the initial of the note it names in letter notation. Clefs began life as letters placed directly on a line to mark its pitch; generations of copyists then stylised that letter G, stroke by stroke, until it drifted into the scroll shape known today, whose lower loop curls around the very line it marks. This process of gradual stylisation, rather than a single stroke of invention, explains why the treble clef in an old manuscript looks more like an angular G than today's rounded scroll: the current shape is an end point, not a starting point.
This clef is also called the G clef on the second line, a distinction that can feel unnecessary now that common practice has settled on a single position for it, but it's a reminder that, strictly speaking, any of the five lines could in theory carry a G fixed by this same clef, at a different pitch depending on which line is chosen.
The bass clef, and why the staff needs two clefs
The bass clef works on exactly the same principle as the treble clef, but fixes a different landmark: its two dots straddle the second-to-last line from the bottom, the fourth line, and fix on that line the F just below middle C, an octave and a second lower than the G fixed by the treble clef. It's the clef for the piano's left hand, for bass, cello, or low voices such as bass and baritone.
Its shape also descends from a stylised letter, the F it's named for, but its graphic evolution was noticeably more eventful than the treble clef's, passing through several intermediate forms before settling into the shape used today. The two dots that accompany it now are not some arbitrary addition: they descend from the two horizontal bars of the original capital F, gradually reduced by copyists until only two dots remained on either side of the letter's vertical stroke, itself stylised into the curve that curls around the F line.
One question remains that the shape of the clefs alone doesn't answer: why not just use a single clef for everything? The answer is about readability rather than any need to transpose music from one instrument to another. A low voice or instrument, written in treble clef, would pile up almost entirely below the staff, on a stack of ledger lines that are hard to read at a glance; that same voice, read in bass clef, sits comfortably inside the staff itself, with no need for a single ledger line. Two clefs cover the overwhelming majority of everyday repertoire, but theory counts quite a few more: a C clef, which fixes middle C itself rather than G or F, still exists today in several different positions on the staff, used for instance by the viola; of the fifteen theoretically possible combinations of three clef letters and five line positions, practice had settled on only eight in common use by the mid-eighteenth century. This guide sticks to the two clefs that cover almost every instrument and voice on the Music Hub, treble and bass.
Naming the lines and spaces: the mnemonics for each clef
Once the clef is in place, every line and every space carries a fixed name that never changes from one score to the next: it's that name you need to be able to read instantly, without recounting from the clef for every single note. In treble clef, the five lines, from lowest to highest, carry the notes E, G, B, D, F; a classic mnemonic phrase, one word per line in order, helps fix them for good, the traditional one being "Every Good Boy Does Fine". The four spaces, always read bottom to top, carry F, A, C, E, which conveniently spell the word FACE outright.
In bass clef, the five lines carry G, B, D, F, A, and the four spaces carry A, C, E, G, the same note names as in treble clef, since the musical alphabet only has seven letters to draw on, but pitched in the markedly lower register that the bass clef exists precisely to cover. The same kind of mnemonic phrase exists for bass clef as for treble clef, one for the lines and one for the spaces, the traditional ones being "Good Boys Do Fine Always" for the lines and "All Cows Eat Grass" for the spaces.
These two sets of landmarks, the treble clef's and the bass clef's, converge on one and the same note: middle C on the piano, written on the ledger line just below the staff in treble clef and on the ledger line just above the staff in bass clef. That meeting point is no minor detail: it's exactly what allows a piano grand staff, its two staves stacked and joined by a brace, to be read as a single continuous space rather than as two independent note ladders, the left hand climbing upward as the right hand moves downward, until the two meet exactly on that shared middle C.
These note names, E, G, B, D, F for the treble clef lines, and so on, are the same plain letter names already used throughout the Music Hub's chord charts, so there's no separate system to translate between here, unlike the historical French solfège syllables, do re mi fa sol la si, which name these very same notes and which another Music Hub guide compares letter by letter for anyone who runs across them. The staff itself reads the same regardless of which naming system is used to talk about it outside the staff.
Note values: whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note, sixteenth note
A note's position on the staff gives its pitch; its shape gives its duration, completely independently of position. Five values cover the bulk of everyday repertoire, each worth exactly half of the one before it in this list: the whole note, the half note, the quarter note, the eighth note, the sixteenth note.
The whole note is written as a plain hollow oval, with no stem and no flag: it's the longest value in this scale, often used for a note held through an entire bar in four-four time. The half note adds a stem, a vertical line, to that same hollow oval head: it's worth half a whole note. The quarter note keeps the stem but fills in the notehead, turning it from hollow to solid: it's worth half a half note. The eighth note adds a flag, a small curved hook attached to the top of the stem: it's worth half a quarter note. The sixteenth note adds a second flag, stacked below the first: it's worth half an eighth note, a quarter of a quarter note.

This strict proportion, each value dividing the one before it by two, is nothing like a recent arbitrary convention: it goes back to medieval mensural notation, which already distinguished several duration shapes governed by fixed ratios as early as the thirteenth century, before today's strictly binary ratio, each value worth exactly half of the one before it, gradually won out over the divisions by three that still coexisted with it at the time.
When several eighth or sixteenth notes follow one another, their flags often merge into one or two continuous horizontal bars called a beam, joining the stems together; a beam changes nothing about each note's duration but visually groups together the notes of a single beat or a single rhythmic unit, making them faster to read than a run of separate flags.
Rests: one symbol per value, a precise spot on the staff
Every note value has a matching rest of the same duration, a symbol that shows how long to play nothing rather than how long to hold a note. The whole rest is worth the silence of a whole note, four beats in a four-four bar; the half rest is worth the silence of a half note, two beats; the quarter rest is worth the silence of a quarter note, one beat; the eighth rest is worth the silence of an eighth note, half a beat; the sixteenth rest is worth the silence of a sixteenth note, a quarter of a beat. This scale mirrors the note-value scale exactly, dividing by two at every step, rest after rest.

Two of these symbols are easily mixed up by an untrained eye, because they look so much alike: the whole rest and the half rest are both a small solid rectangle attached to a line of the staff. Their only difference lies in their exact position: the whole rest is drawn hanging below the fourth line from the bottom, like a small rectangle hanging down from that line; the half rest is drawn sitting on the third line, the staff's middle line, like a small rectangle resting on top of it. A simple way to stop confusing them: the whole rest hangs, the half rest sits, and that single detail, whether it points down or up from the line, is enough to settle four beats of silence against two.
The shorter rests change graphic family rather than just changing size: the quarter rest is drawn as a squiggly mark, often described as looking like a reversed number 7, placed in the middle of the staff without touching any particular line, neither hanging nor sitting like the two longer rests. The eighth rest, for its part, doesn't derive from the quarter rest's shape at all: it's a distinct diagonal stroke, closer to a small slanted line, with a flag attached to it. The sixteenth rest repeats that same eighth-rest shape with a second flag added, following exactly the same stacking principle as the flags on the eighth and sixteenth notes on the played-note side.
These symbols, too, inherit a history older than their current use: medieval mensural notation already assigned a distinct rest symbol to each of its note values, before the whole rest, half rest, quarter rest and eighth rest settled, century after century, into the shapes known today.
The dot that increases a value by half
A dot placed immediately after a notehead increases its duration by exactly half of its own value, no more and no less. A dotted quarter note is therefore worth a quarter note, one beat, plus half a quarter note, half a beat, one and a half beats in total; a dotted half note is worth two beats plus one, three beats; a dotted eighth note is worth half a beat plus a quarter of a beat, three-quarters of a beat.
The most common mistake at this stage is treating the dot as if it always added the same fixed amount, often mistaken for a full beat, no matter which note it's attached to. The dot never adds an absolute amount: it adds a proportion, half the value of the note it follows, which means the very same dot adds a full beat after a half note but only a quarter of a beat after an eighth note. There's no shortcut that gets around this calculation: it's better to work it out consciously every time a dotted note comes up, until the most frequent dotted values, the dotted quarter note and the dotted eighth note above all, become durations recognised at a glance rather than recalculated each time.
The same dot principle applies to rests just as much as to notes: a dotted quarter rest is worth a beat and a half of silence, exactly as a dotted quarter note is worth a beat and a half of sound. A second dot, rarer and reserved for more specific durations, can follow the first to add, in turn, half of the value the first dot had just added; this double-dot case falls outside the scope of this introductory guide and turns up mostly in written classical music, rarely in an everyday song chart or score.
The tie that joins two notes of the same pitch
A tie is a curved line that joins two notes of the exact same pitch, never two different pitches. Despite what its shape might suggest, it doesn't join two separate sounds: the two tied notes form a single sound, whose total duration equals the sum of the two written durations, with no new attack heard on the second note. A quarter note tied to an eighth note, for instance, is never heard as two separate notes: it's heard as a single note held for a beat and a half, exactly the same result as a dotted quarter note, but arrived at by a different means.
This closeness in outcome to the dot is no accident, but the two devices don't substitute for each other in every case. A dot stays attached to a single notehead and can never cross a barline: there's no way to write a dotted whole note that starts at the end of one bar and finishes at the start of the next. A tie, on the other hand, crosses barlines without any trouble at all: that's even one of its most common uses, extending a note begun in one bar into the following bar, a case the plain dot simply can't write. A tie also lets you combine values that no dot could ever express, such as a whole note tied to a quarter note for five beats in a single unbroken sound, a duration no single dotted note can represent.
One practical detail heads off a common hesitation: if the first note of a tie carries a sharp, a flat or a natural, the second note doesn't need to repeat that sign to inherit the same alteration; the tie implicitly carries the exact pitch of the first note through to the second.
A tie should never be confused with a sign that looks almost identical to it, the slur, also called legato, which instead connects several notes of different pitches to show that they should flow together smoothly and continuously, with no break in the phrasing. A slur changes no note's duration at all; it only changes how the notes connect to one another. It falls outside the scope of this guide, which focuses on reading durations rather than on interpretation or phrasing.
Accidentals: sharps, flats and naturals within a bar
A sharp, flat or natural placed directly in front of a note, in the middle of a bar, is called an accidental: it changes the pitch of that one note only, on the spot, without announcing anything for the rest of the piece. That's an entirely different notion from the key signature, the group of sharps or flats placed once and for all after the clef, at the start of every line of the staff, which holds for the whole piece and for every octave of a given note; another Music Hub guide covers that mechanism in its own right, so there's no need to go over it again here. What sets an accidental apart, and what this guide alone covers, are the rules specific to its limited reach: how long it lasts, and exactly which notes it actually applies to.
An accidental lasts exactly as long as the bar it appears in, never beyond: the next barline automatically cancels its effect, and the same note there goes back to its natural pitch or to the one set by the key signature, with no natural sign needed to bring it back. But its reach is even narrower than a single bar: it only applies at the exact pitch, meaning the exact octave, where it was written. If the same note comes back a little further on in the same bar but an octave higher or lower, the accidental doesn't automatically carry over to it: the sharp, flat or natural has to be rewritten at that new octave for it to apply, otherwise the note reverts to its unaltered pitch. That's an important difference from the key signature, which applies without exception to every octave of a given note for the whole piece.
In practice, some composers or editors still add, right after a barline, a reminder of the natural sign or the accidental already technically cancelled by that barline: a so-called courtesy accidental, often written in parentheses, which changes nothing about the rule but spares the performer the slightest visual hesitation when a note has just been altered right before the end of the previous bar. It's never a notational requirement, only a courtesy to the reader, not to be confused with an actual rule of the staff.
Counting a bar: adding up values to the right total
Once note values, their rests, the dot and the tie are in place, one practical skill remains to pull it all together: checking that what's written in a bar actually adds up, beat by beat, to the number of beats that bar is supposed to hold. This kind of counting isn't about feeling a groove or locking in a right-hand strumming pattern on guitar, which stays the subject of another Music Hub guide devoted to rhythmic patterns; what's meant here is an exercise in pure, almost arithmetical reading, adding up the value of every symbol encountered until the running total lands exactly where it should.
Take a bar in four-four time, the most common, without going into the detail of the different time signatures themselves. A bar filled with a dotted quarter note, an eighth note, a quarter note and then a quarter rest adds up like this: one beat plus half a beat for the dotted quarter note, one and a half beats; half a beat for the eighth note, bringing the total to two beats; a full beat for the following quarter note, three beats in total; a beat of silence for the closing quarter rest, four beats exactly. The bar checks out, because every value, played or silent, was counted without exception.

This same calculation extends without difficulty across several bars as soon as a tie comes into play. A note held by a tie that crosses a barline keeps counting toward the following bar's total, with no new attack, exactly as if it had been rewritten there with its own notehead: the count for the second bar therefore starts with that portion of the note already under way, before carrying on normally with the notes and rests belonging to that new bar.
This check, repeated bar after bar, is what makes it possible to read an unfamiliar passage without relying solely on the ear or on a feel for the rhythm: as long as the sum of a bar's values doesn't land exactly right, a reading mistake has crept in somewhere, a forgotten rest, a miscounted dot or a missed tie, and it's better to track it down before playing the next bar than to carry on from a false start. It's a proofreading reflex just as useful for a musician sight-reading an unfamiliar score as for someone copying out or correcting an existing transcription.
Common pitfalls to avoid

Why — A staff systematically alternates line, then space, then line as you move up or down by a single step; ignoring that alternation makes you read a third where the score only writes a second, or the reverse, a mistake that throws off an entire melodic phrase without any single wrong note immediately alerting the ear.
Do this instead : Before naming a note, check whether it sits on a line or in a space relative to the previous note: two neighbouring notes on the staff, one on a line and the other in the adjacent space, are always a single step apart from each other, never more.
