The I-V-vi-IV progression: the formula in degrees
In a major key, every note of the scale carries a chord, and those chords are numbered by degree, from I to VII, in roman numerals. The quality of each chord follows directly from the intervals of the major scale: degrees I, IV and V give major chords, degrees ii, iii and vi give minor chords, and vii gives a diminished chord. That is why, in roman-numeral notation, major degrees are written in upper case (I, IV, V) and minor degrees in lower case (ii, iii, vi): the case alone tells you the chord's colour, with no extra word needed.
Four of these seven degrees turn up constantly in pop songs: the first (I), the fifth (V), the sixth (vi) and the fourth (IV), always played in that order and looped. This exact sequence is what is called the I-V-vi-IV progression, sometimes nicknamed the "Axis progression" in English-language music-theory writing. In C major it translates note for note into I = C, V = G, vi = A minor and IV = F, giving the loop C, G, A minor, F, which can be repeated endlessly under a verse just as well as under a chorus without ever leaving the starting key.
This particular choice of four degrees is not arbitrary. I, IV and V are what theory calls the three primary triads of a key: together they cover, without any repetition, all seven notes of the major scale. In C, the I (C, E, G), the IV (F, A, C) and the V (G, B, D) together give exactly C, D, E, F, G, A and B, the whole scale. The vi joins this trio as the relative minor of the I: built on the sixth degree, it shares two of its three notes with the tonic, C and E in this example, which is why it sounds so close to the I while still bringing a different colour. The four chords of the pop loop are, in other words, nothing more than the three major pillars of the key plus the closest minor cousin of the first of them.
Why this loop works: tension, rest and colour
Each of the four chords carries a precise harmonic role. The I is home, the tonic chord where the ear feels settled and expects nothing more. The V, the dominant chord, contains the leading tone of the scale, a note a half step below the I that naturally pulls the ear toward resolution: it is what creates the pull, the engine that makes you want something to happen. The IV, the subdominant chord, opens up the sound without imposing as much tension as the V; the move from IV to I, called plagal motion, has a gentler flavour of resolution, almost like a breath before settling back home.
The IV and the V also share a symmetrical relationship with the I: the V sits a fifth above the tonic, the IV a fifth below it, so the two chords sit on either side of the I, one pulling forward, the other holding back gently. This mirrored position, well known to theorists as the subdominant-dominant relationship, is one reason the trio I-IV-V forms such a stable harmonic backbone across tonal music generally, even before the vi is added.
The vi, the sixth degree and the only minor chord in the series, brings the colour. In a loop that could otherwise stay entirely major and bright, this minor slips in a shade of melancholy, that small bittersweet pang that touches the emotions without ever tipping the song into a dark key. The move from V to vi even has its own name in classical harmony, the deceptive or interrupted cadence: the ear expects the V to resolve onto the I, and instead it lands on the vi, a neighbouring chord that shares two notes with the I. That small surprise, followed by a gentle return through the IV, is a large part of what makes the loop both familiar and gripping.
Another, quieter factor also works in this progression's favour: all four chords belong to the same major scale, with no note borrowed from outside the key. The ear therefore never has to readjust to a new tonal centre, unlike progressions that reach for chords foreign to the starting scale. And because neighbouring chords such as I and IV, or vi and IV, often share one or two common tones, moving from one chord to the next requires very little melodic motion: the bass line or the inner voices glide smoothly from one chord to the next, which adds to the sense of fluidity in the loop even when it repeats dozens of times within the same song.
This economy of motion also explains why the loop holds up so well under the repetition a pop song demands, with its verses and choruses coming back again and again. A progression that required big leaps between chords, or that frequently strayed outside the starting key, would tire the ear far faster. I-V-vi-IV, by contrast, always closes its loop with a sense of completeness: it pushes outward with the V, offers a gentle surprise with the vi, then returns step by step with the IV, a complete cycle that can start over indefinitely without ever feeling like it is just spinning in place.
A bit of history: from the baroque to 1950s doo-wop
The idea of looping tonic, subdominant and dominant is not something pop invented. Cyclical harmonic sequences of this kind, built over a bass line that steps steadily down or up, already existed in 17th-century baroque music, in forms such as the chaconne or the ground bass. The direct ancestor of the pop loop, the I-vi-IV-V progression, where the sixth degree arrives in second position rather than third, enters popular song as early as 1938 with the tune "Heart and Soul" by Hoagy Carmichael and Frank Loesser, before becoming the backbone of 1950s doo-wop, the vocal group style that gave it its most common nickname, the "'50s progression." Hits from the era such as "Earth Angel," "All I Have to Do Is Dream" and "Stand by Me" are among the titles most often cited by musicologists as documented illustrations of this doo-wop lineage, without that meaning they all share exactly the same chart.
This same cyclical-bass principle, a handful of chords always returning in the same order to carry an entire piece, is exactly what baroque composers were already exploiting in the chaconne and the passacaglia, two forms built on the obstinate repetition of a single bass pattern while the upper voices vary above it. 1950s doo-wop reinvents that very same instinct two and a half centuries later, with a simpler chord vocabulary and group vocal delivery, but a very similar underlying logic: a handful of chords, always in the same order, stable enough to carry dozens of different songs without ever wearing out the ear.
The I-V-vi-IV variation proper, with the vi in third position rather than second, takes longer to catch on, but it explodes in particular from the 2000s onward. American music critic Marc Hirsh was already calling it "inescapable" in an article published in late December 2008, so thoroughly did it saturate the radio at the time. Two generations separated by half a century, the doo-wop vocal groups of the fifties and the pop radio of the 2000s, thus converged, each in its own way, on the same harmonic instinct: a four-chord loop built around a single minor chord to carry the melody.
The loop's nicknames: "Axis progression" and "sensitive" progression
The I-V-vi-IV progression carries several informal nicknames in English-language music-theory writing. "Axis progression" comes directly from the comedy sketch that made it famous, covered in the next section. It is also sometimes nicknamed the "pop-punk progression," since it turns up so often in that genre's repertoire, where its simplicity and energy suit fast, direct songs perfectly. But that nickname is misleading if it suggests the loop belongs to a single style: it turns up just as often in piano ballads, stadium rock and reggae, very different sonic worlds that nonetheless share the same harmonic backbone under radically different tempos, production and instrumentation.
Its variation that starts on the vi rather than the I, the order vi-IV-I-V, earned an even more striking nickname: the "sensitive female chord progression." The phrase comes from an article by music critic Marc Hirsh, published in the Boston Globe on 31 December 2008. Hirsh recounted having first spotted this same sequence a decade earlier, in 1998, noticing a striking resemblance between two songs by singer-songwriters from the mid-1990s Lilith Fair scene. By 2008, though, he found that this same chord sequence had spread well beyond that original circle and turned up in hits by very different artists and genres that year, from alternative rock to mainstream pop. The name has stuck in musicians' vocabulary, even though the vi-IV-I-V order was of course never the property of a single style or a single type of performer.
The sketch that made it iconic: Axis of Awesome
If this progression is known today well beyond circles of musicians, it is largely thanks to an Australian comedy trio, The Axis of Awesome, from Sydney, formed in 2006. Their song "Four Chords," originally written in D major and most often performed live in E major, drew its first wide attention at the Edinburgh Fringe festival in 2008, where the band performed. Following that appearance, the track was played on BBC Radio 1, which sent an early audience looking for the video online and kicked off its viral spread well before the official music video was released.
The official video for the song, posted to YouTube on 20 July 2011, went on to chart on the UK Singles Chart, reaching number 175. The sketch strings together roughly three dozen hit songs spanning very different genres and decades, all reduced to the same four-chord loop, with nothing but the tempo, melody and lyrics changing from one title to the next: it is precisely this contrast, between the sameness of the chart and the apparent diversity of the songs, that makes the joke land. Between them, the most-viewed versions of the video on YouTube had racked up more than a hundred million views by the early 2020s. The sketch did not invent anything, the loop had been circulating since the baroque era and doo-wop long before it, but it turned a music-theory observation into a viral joke understood by a mass audience, and gave the progression its most widespread nickname, the "Axis progression."
Transposing it into every key
The point of learning the progression by degree rather than by fixed notes is that it moves as it is into any key. I-V-vi-IV stays I-V-vi-IV: only the notes carrying those degrees change according to the starting scale. In G major, for instance, the loop becomes G, D, E minor, C; in D major, it becomes D, A, B minor, G. The pattern stays exactly the same; you are simply placing it higher or lower on the fretboard or the keyboard.

On the guitar, a capo lets you keep easy open shapes while changing the actual key. You play the same comfortable positions in the key you know best, and the capo takes care of raising the pitch to match a singer, a recording or another instrument. Memorise the loop in a key you are comfortable with, C or G for instance, then use the capo or a simple shift of the degrees to find it elsewhere. You are not copying any specific song's chart by doing this: you are applying a general theoretical formula that happens to work across thousands of different titles, exactly as the table above shows.
This logic of transposing by degree is not limited to this one loop, either: once understood, it applies to any chord sequence, in any style. Knowing that a song leans on its I, its V, its vi and its IV, rather than memorising a list of notes tied to one key, is the reflex that lets you replay the same repertoire with different singers, different instruments, or simply a voice that prefers a different range from one night to the next.
The order variations: vi-IV-I-V and I-IV-vi-V
The same four chords recombine in other orders, and each permutation shifts the colour you hear. Starting on the vi gives the vi-IV-I-V variation, already met above under the name "sensitive" progression: it opens directly on the minor, giving a darker, more intense entry before the I delivers the expected resolution. In C major that gives A minor, F, C, G instead of starting on C major.
Another common rearrangement is I-IV-vi-V, that is C, F, A minor, G in C major. These are still the same four chords, I, IV, V and vi, with only their order of appearance changed. Not every permutation is equal to the ear, though: of the twenty-four orderings mathematically possible for four distinct chords, only a handful sound truly natural on a loop, and these are almost always the ones that keep a V-to-I or V-to-vi motion somewhere in the cycle, that moment of tension followed by resolution which gives the whole harmonic phrase its meaning. Once you have the four positions down in a given key, you move from one variation to another without relearning anything, just by changing where the loop starts.
This flexibility is also a composing tool in its own right. Many songwriters keep exactly the same set of four chords for an entire song, verse and chorus alike, but change the loop's starting point depending on the section: a verse that starts on the IV or the vi will sound more held back, more suspended, while a chorus that comes back starting on the I will sound more assertive, more resolved, even though the underlying harmony has not objectively changed by a single chord. It is an economical way to give each section its own emotional colour while reusing a single piece of harmonic material from start to finish.
Telling it apart from other pop progressions
I-V-vi-IV is only one way of stringing chords together in pop, and comparing it with its neighbours helps make clear what sets it apart. The 1950s doo-wop progression, I-vi-IV-V, uses exactly the same four degrees but in a different order: the vi arrives as early as second position, right after the I, giving a path that tips toward the minor immediately before climbing back through the IV and the V, with a noticeably more nostalgic, rounder emotional arc than I-V-vi-IV, which delays the shift to minor until after a detour through the dominant.
At the opposite end, the twelve-bar blues rests on only three chords, I, IV and V, all major, most often each enriched with a dominant seventh: with no minor chord at all, this chart stays rawer, more earthbound, without the touch of melancholy the vi brings to the pop loop, and its bass movement, which mostly alternates leaps of a fourth and a fifth, sounds squarer, more repetitive from one section to the next.
Even further from the simplicity of I-V-vi-IV, the ii-V-I cadence that structures much of jazz introduces a second minor degree, the ii, absent from the pop loop, and links its three chords through successive descending-fifth motions, a far more elaborate cycle-of-fifths progression than the simple back-and-forth around the I found in I-V-vi-IV. The result is a noticeably more sophisticated, more chromatic resolution, built for improvisation, whereas the pop loop is above all built to be memorable from the very first listen. The best way to lock the loop into your fingers is to play it over real songs rather than in a vacuum. Spot a track built on these four chords, start the recording, and turn the progression in time over the top until the changes become automatic. Begin slowly, one chord per strong beat, then speed up as your hand keeps up without hesitating.
To recognise the loop by ear without the chart in front of you, the most reliable clue is the movement of the bass at the moment the minor chord appears: after a bright I and V, a dip toward a darker colour almost always signals the vi, before a more open chord pulls things back toward resolution. Training yourself to spot that shift, in songs you do not already know by heart, sharpens your harmonic ear far more effectively than reading a ready-made chart ever could.
