The ii-V-I cadence links three chords built on three degrees of the same key: the second degree, as a minor chord with a minor seventh (m7), followed by the fifth degree, as a dominant chord (7), then the first degree, the tonic chord, as a major chord with a major seventh (maj7). In C major, that gives D minor 7, G 7, C major 7, or Dm7-G7-Cmaj7. Degree analysis: how the ii-V-I cadence is built

Roman numeral harmonic analysis numbers every degree of a scale from I to VII, reserving uppercase for major-quality chords and lowercase for minor-quality ones. This convention did not start with jazz: it goes back to European harmonic theory around the turn of the 19th century. Roman numerals first appear in 1774 under the pen of theorist Johann Kirnberger, then with Abbé Georg Joseph Vogler from 1776 onward, but it was the German theorist Gottfried Weber who popularised and systematised the upper/lowercase distinction in his treatise Versuch einer geordneten Theorie der Tonsetzkunst, published between 1817 and 1821. That same logic, carried into jazz teaching without a single change, is the skeleton behind the ii-V-I cadence.

In a major scale, every degree naturally carries a specific chord quality, with no alteration needed at all. The second degree carries a minor chord, the fifth a major chord, the first a major chord: hence lowercase ii and uppercase V, I. Stacking a seventh on top of each of these three chords gives the cadence its exact colour: m7 on the ii, a dominant 7th on the V, maj7 on the I. One structural detail carries through the rest of this guide: all three chords of the cadence come out of the seven notes of that same major scale, with no alteration added at all. Dm7, G7, and Cmaj7 contain nothing but notes from C major. What creates the tension, then, is not a note foreign to the key, but a specific interval already present in the scale itself: the fourth and seventh degrees, F and B in C major, sit a tritone apart by nature. That same interval reappears, unchanged, between the third and the seventh of the G7 chord, which is exactly why that chord, while perfectly diatonic, carries the whole tension of the cadence on its own. The tritone is not borrowed from outside the key at all: it is built into its very structure, which is why the resolution onto the tonic chord sounds so natural.

This same construction principle applies identically in any major key: only the note names change, never the logic of the degrees or the gap between them. The table below applies it to six common keys, from the simplest to the most heavily altered.

Why it works: descending fifths and a tritone that resolves

The way the root of each chord moves to the next is what makes the ii-V-I cadence so conclusive to the ear. From D to G, then from G to C, every bass leap is a descending fifth, or, which amounts to exactly the same thing to the ear, an ascending fourth. In tonal harmony, that descending-fifth motion is the strongest one there is: it underpins nearly every conclusive cadence, from a single dominant chord dropping onto its tonic to the long chains of falling fifths found in both classical music and jazz. Stringing together two descending fifths in a row, as the ii-V-I cadence does, literally doubles that sense of resolution: the ear picks up a clear direction from the very first chord, before it even hears the third.

A second engine joins that bass motion, this one purely intervallic: the tritone sitting at the heart of the dominant chord. G7 stacks G, B, D, F; between its third, B, and its seventh, F, sits a tritone, the interval that splits the octave exactly in half and that has remained, since the Middle Ages, one of the most unstable in Western music. That instability is not a flaw: it is precisely what pushes the ear to demand a continuation. The tritone resolves naturally by contracting inward, each note moving the smallest possible distance: F, the seventh of G7, drops a half step to E, the third of the C chord that follows, while B stays put and becomes the major seventh of Cmaj7. That tightening of the tritone, described in more detail in the section on voice leading, is the precise harmonic gesture that makes the resolution sound like an inevitability rather than just another chord change.

The ii-V-I cadence therefore combines two resolution engines at once, rarely brought together elsewhere with this much clarity: a bass line descending by fifths, and a tritone closing in on itself. It is this stacking of two different tension mechanisms, one horizontal at the level of the roots, the other vertical inside the dominant chord itself, that explains why this cadence sounds so conclusive, far more than any other three-chord diatonic sequence picked at random within the same key.

A progression at the heart of jazz's language

The ii-V-I is not just one progression among others in the jazz repertoire: it is the single most used progression in the entire genre, present in almost every standard in the repertoire, often several times within the same tune. A large part of jazz pedagogy, from improvisation methods to exercise books, is built directly around this cadence, since it serves as the basic building block for both harmonic analysis and solo construction.

Jazz's harmonic language inherits directly from European functional tonality, the very same tradition that gave rise to Roman numeral analysis. But jazz pushed that inheritance further than most 20th-century popular music, by generalising the systematic use of seventh chords instead of plain triads, and by speeding up the harmonic rhythm of tunes. Swing in the 1930s, and then bebop in the 1940s, intensified this trend in particular: musicians of that era pile up ii-V-I cadences inside a single bar, sometimes chaining them one after another through neighbouring keys, which eventually turned this progression into the true backbone of the genre's harmonic vocabulary.

The theory that now lets a player match a specific scale to each chord of a cadence, a principle covered later in this guide, owes a great deal to the theorist and composer George Russell, who published his book Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization in 1953. That book is considered the first harmonic theory built from inside jazz itself rather than carried over from European classical music, and it went on to feed an entire strand of improvisation thought directly in terms of scales matched to each chord rather than simple arpeggios.

Voice leading: what moves, what stays put

Voice leading describes how each note of a chord moves toward the next chord. A well-led cadence never shifts every note by big leaps: instead it tries to keep as many common tones as possible from one chord to the next, and to move the remaining notes by the smallest interval possible, a half step or a whole step. It is this economy of motion, more than the mere sequence of chord names, that makes a cadence sound smooth to the ear and comfortable to play.

Between Dm7 (D, F, A, C) and G7 (G, B, D, F), two notes stay exactly the same: D, the root of the first chord, becomes the fifth of the second, and F, the minor third of the first chord, becomes the seventh of the second, neither one moving an inch. The two remaining notes move by the smallest possible distance: A drops a whole step to G, the new root, and C drops a half step to B, the new third.

The same principle repeats between G7 (G, B, D, F) and Cmaj7 (C, E, G, B): G, the root of the first chord, becomes the fifth of the second, and B, the third of the first chord, also stays in place and becomes the major seventh of the second. D drops a whole step to C, the new root, and above all, F, the seventh of the dominant chord and one of the two notes of the tritone mentioned earlier, drops a single half step to E, the third of the tonic chord. That precise motion, the seventh of the V falling onto the third of the I, is the single most important gesture in the whole cadence: it is what physically closes the tritone and gives the ear the exact feeling of a resolution.

Across the eight note changes that separate the cadence's three chords, four notes stay perfectly still from one chord to the next and the remaining four never move by more than a whole step. That closeness between the chords is why a pianist or guitarist can voice an entire ii-V-I almost without shifting hand position, and why the cadence stays so natural to play even when strung together quickly, at a fast tempo.

Spotting it by ear and on a chart

By ear, a ii-V-I cadence is recognisable by a feeling of tension that builds across the first two chords and then releases all at once on the third, almost like a question followed by its answer. The second chord, the dominant, carries most of that tension thanks to the tritone it contains; the third chord, the tonic, brings the release, a clean landing point after the motion of the two chords before it.

On a written chart, the giveaway is just as direct: look for a minor seventh chord, followed a little further on by a dominant chord built a fifth above it (or, which comes to the same thing, a fourth below it), itself followed by the tonic chord built another fifth above that. That regular gap between the roots, always a descending fifth from one chord to the next, remains the most reliable signal, far more than the chord names alone, for spotting the cadence even in a chart loaded with substitutions or extensions.

The ii-V-I cadence turns up constantly in a jazz standard, often at the end of a section or a harmonic phrase, as a mandatory checkpoint before pushing the tune forward or wrapping it up. The motion is not exclusive to jazz: a good deal of pop, easy listening, and film music borrows the same harmonic gesture to close out a phrase, often right before returning to the verse or the chorus, even without reaching for the full seventh-chord colours. Once the ear gets used to this bass motion and this feeling of resolution, it becomes easy to spot, even hidden behind richer chords or substitutions.

The minor version: half-diminished ii, V7, i

The ii-V-I cadence also exists in a minor version, with one major difference on its second chord. In a natural minor scale, the second degree does not carry an ordinary minor chord but a diminished one: its fifth, built naturally from the notes of the scale, sits a half step lower than a perfect fifth. Adding a minor seventh on top of that diminished triad gives a chord known as half-diminished, written m7b5, a quite different colour from the plain m7 of the major version.

Half-diminished should not be confused with the full diminished chord, also called a diminished seventh chord, which stacks a diminished seventh rather than a minor seventh on top of the same diminished triad: the two chords look alike on paper but sound different and do not share the same harmonic function. The fifth chord raises a problem of its own in minor keys too. Built straight from the notes of the natural minor scale, it would give a minor chord with a minor seventh, with no tritone and therefore none of the pull needed toward the tonic. To recover that tension, jazz systematically borrows the seventh degree from the harmonic minor scale, a version of minor where that degree is raised a half step to form a leading tone: that raised note recreates exactly the tritone the dominant chord needs, turning it back into an ordinary 7 chord rather than a weakened minor one.

In C minor, that gives D half-diminished (D, F, Ab, C) on the second degree, G7 (G, B, D, F) on the fifth, with B borrowed from harmonic minor rather than the Bb that natural minor would give, and C minor on the first degree, as a minor seventh chord or, more rarely, with a major seventh for an even tenser colour. The descending-fifths bass motion and the tritone resolution then work exactly as in the major version; only the colour of the chords changes, darker and more tense throughout the cadence.

The I-vi-ii-V turnaround: looping the cadence back on itself

In a jazz standard, the ii-V-I cadence very often extends into a turnaround, a four-chord sequence that loops the progression back on itself instead of simply settling on the tonic. The most common version adds the key's sixth degree, as a minor chord, right after the tonic chord and before relaunching the usual ii-V: I-vi-ii-V.

The sixth degree naturally carries a minor chord in a major scale, the chord of the key's relative minor: in C major, that gives A minor, or Am7 once the seventh is added. The turnaround then gives Cmaj7-Am7-Dm7-G7, four chords that fit across four bars and that naturally lead back to C major the moment they repeat, forming a complete harmonic loop. The bass motion stays consistent with that of the plain cadence: from C to A is a descending third, then the same two descending fifths of the usual ii-V-I follow.

This turnaround mainly serves to keep the harmonic motion active over several bars without ever really settling, which explains its heavy presence at the end of a section or a chorus throughout the jazz repertoire, where it lets one pass through the chart flow straight into the next without a break. The same harmonic gesture turns up, often in a simplified triad form rather than as seventh chords, throughout a good deal of mid-20th-century pop and vocal music, which inherited this harmonic language directly.

Tritone substitution, in brief

Tritone substitution replaces a cadence's dominant chord with another dominant chord, this one built a tritone away, six half steps up or down, which comes to exactly the same thing since the tritone splits the octave into two equal halves. In C major, the dominant chord G7 can be replaced by Db7, built a tritone above it.

This substitution works because the two chords share exactly the same tritone, only with the roles swapped: in G7, the tritone sits between B, the third, and F, the seventh; in Db7, those same two notes, respelled as C (enharmonic to B) and Gb (enharmonic to F), form the seventh and the third of the chord respectively, in reversed positions. The tritone, which carried the whole tension of the cadence, stays perfectly intact, and it keeps resolving exactly the same way toward the tonic chord.

What really changes is the bass motion: instead of the usual cadence's descending fifths, D-G-C, tritone substitution gives D-Db-C, a chromatic descent, half step by half step, straight down to the tonic. It is this chromatic bass line, more unusual and more colourful to the ear than the classic descending fifth, that explains why bebop musicians of the 1940s widely generalised this kind of chromatic reharmonisation in their improvising vocabulary.

For improvising, a substituted dominant chord most often calls for a different scale than the original V7, the lydian dominant scale, a major scale altered by a single note. That topic goes beyond the scope of this brief overview: tritone substitution remains, above all, a reharmonisation tool, one to use in agreement with the other musicians in the band, since it genuinely changes the bass note being heard.

Improvising over the cadence: which scale for each chord

The simplest way to improvise over a major ii-V-I cadence is to remember that all three of its chords come from the very same major scale, as covered above: in theory, a single scale is therefore enough for all three, with no need to switch at every chord. In practice, thinking in degrees sharpens that approach: the dorian mode over the ii, mixolydian over the V, the major scale itself, or ionian mode, over the I. These three modes contain exactly the same seven notes, those of the starting major scale; only the reference tonic changes from one chord to the next. This total kinship between the three scales has a downside: mechanically playing the same run of notes over all three chords, without ever really thinking about the change in harmonic function, produces lines that are correct on paper but flat to the ear, ones that ignore the tension specific to each chord. What sets a well-played ii-V-I apart from a plain scale exercise is the way the melodic line highlights the notes proper to each chord, especially its third and seventh, and the way it negotiates the tritone's resolution between the V and the I rather than sidestepping it.

The minor version of the cadence complicates that choice of scales a little, since the half-diminished ii and the V7 borrowed from harmonic minor no longer strictly belong to the same scale as the tonic chord.
