Saxophone transposition: reading a chart in Bb or Eb

The saxophone is a transposing instrument: the note you read on your part isn't the note that actually sounds, unlike the piano or guitar, which are concert-pitch instruments where the written note and the note you hear are the same. The saxophone, a whole family of transposing instruments

On piano or guitar, the note you see on the page is exactly the note you hear: these are called concert-pitch instruments. A written C produces a sounding C, no offset. That isn't true of the whole instrument family, and the saxophone is a case in point: it's a transposing instrument, meaning the written note and the note that actually sounds are two different notes.

The saxophone isn't alone in this: the clarinet, the horn, the orchestral trumpet also read in a different key from what they produce. But with the saxophone the question comes up seven times over, because the family runs to seven sizes still in use, from the tiny sopranino to the enormous contrabass, and each transposes its own way. Before you can transpose a chart, you first need to know exactly which family your instrument belongs to, and that's not limited to tenor and alto.

Why Bb and Eb specifically: the legacy of Adolphe Sax's military band

The choice of Bb and Eb wasn't arbitrary, but its exact origin is better documented through context than through any written note in Adolphe Sax's own hand explaining his reasoning; sources stay cautious on this specific point. What's known for certain: in 1846, Sax filed a patent describing not one but two complete families of seven saxophones. One series, meant for the orchestra, was pitched in C and F. A second, meant for military music, was pitched in Bb and Eb. It's that second, military series that took hold almost immediately, while the orchestral C/F series was abandoned for lack of commercial success.

The context helps explain why. A year earlier, in 1845, Sax had already patented another family of instruments for military music, the saxhorns, a series of valved brass also pitched alternately in Bb/Eb. Mid-19th-century European bands, meanwhile, already leaned heavily on the Bb clarinet, by then the dominant woodwind voice of military bands, rounded out by a few Eb-pitched instruments used as colour. By reusing that same pair of keys for his military saxophones the following year, Sax wasn't starting from scratch: he was lining his new instrument up with a vocabulary of keys already widespread in the bands of his day, which likely helped its adoption by musicians who were already juggling Bb and Eb instruments.

The full saxophone family, from sopranino to contrabass

Adolphe Sax didn't invent one instrument but a whole family, where each size keeps the same fingerings and simply shifts octave and transposition key. Seven sizes have stayed in everyday use, alternating strictly between the two key families as the instrument gets bigger. The table below gives, for each one, its key and the exact gap between the written note and the note that actually sounds.

In practice, only four saxophones really circulate: alto and tenor dominate jazz, pop and rock by a wide margin, soprano is mostly kept for more piercing solo passages, and baritone anchors the bass line of horn sections in big bands or funk. Sopranino, bass and contrabass remain curiosities, reserved for specialist saxophone ensembles or the odd ambitious orchestration passage: most saxophonists will never come across one in their whole career.

Tenor and soprano: the two faces of Bb

The tenor saxophone and the soprano saxophone both belong to the Bb family of instruments. When a tenor or soprano plays the written note C, the note that actually sounds is a Bb. That holds for every note in the scale: each written note sounds exactly a whole tone below what's printed on the page, and it's that relationship, the note name regardless of octave, that matters for reading a chord chart.

Look at the exact octave rather than just the note name, though, and the two instruments don't behave identically: soprano sounds a major second below what's written, a simple tone, while tenor, a full octave lower, sounds a major ninth below, that is an octave plus a tone. For transposing chords this octave difference changes nothing: written C stays sounding Bb either way. It does matter for writing an orchestration score, where picking the right octave has a real sonic impact.

For a tenor or soprano player, working out your own part from a concert note is therefore a single move, as far as the note name goes: transpose up a whole tone. A concert C is written as D on the tenor part; a concert G is written as A. That's the simpler of the two saxophone transpositions, a single tone, always in the same direction.

Alto and baritone: the two faces of Eb

The alto saxophone and the baritone saxophone, meanwhile, belong to the Eb family of instruments. When an alto or baritone plays the written note C, the note that actually sounds is an Eb. The gap is wider than on Bb instruments, and it goes by two names depending on which octave you measure it in.

Counted upward, the gap between the concert note and the written note is a major sixth: a concert C is written as A on the alto part. Counted downward, in the neighbouring octave, it's a minor third: the same concert C could just as well be written as A an octave lower. Both routes land on the same note name, only the reference octave changes; in practice, many saxophonists default to the minor third, since it's quicker to picture.

As with the tenor/soprano pair, alto and baritone share the same transposed note name but not the same real octave: baritone sounds a full octave below alto, which works out, in exact terms, to a major sixth plus an octave below the written note. Sopranino, at the other end of the Eb family, is the only member of the entire saxophone family whose concert note sounds above the written note rather than below it, a minor third higher, simply because it's too small and too high-pitched to keep counting downward.

A worked example: transposing a whole chart, chord by chord

Take a generic four-chord progression, the I-V-vi-IV type, the same family of loop that turns up in a huge number of different songs without being tied to any single one: in C major, that gives C, G, A minor, F. It's a theoretical object, not the chart of a specific song, but it works perfectly well to illustrate the transposition mechanism from start to finish.

The calculation is the same for every chord in the chart: transpose its root by the interval proper to your instrument, a whole tone up on tenor, a major sixth up on alto, and keep the chord's quality, major stays major, minor stays minor. C thus becomes D on tenor and A on alto; G becomes A on tenor and E on alto; A minor becomes B minor on tenor and F sharp minor on alto; F becomes G on tenor and D on alto.

The point that often escapes beginners is that it isn't just each chord that changes name: it's the whole key of the chart that shifts. The progression was in C major, with no accidentals in the key signature; transposed, it becomes a progression in D major for tenor, with two sharps at the key, and a progression in A major for alto, with three sharps at the key. Thinking in terms of scale degrees, I, V, vi, IV, rather than isolated note names, is exactly what makes that shift automatic: the I-V-vi-IV pattern stays I-V-vi-IV, only the starting key changes.

The pro nuance: an already-transposed part versus reading by ear

All this transposition arithmetic, essential as it is to understand, doesn't necessarily have to be redone on the fly for every note. In a big band, a concert band, or any ensemble that plays from sheet music, the arranger has already done the work ahead of time: every saxophone chair receives a part printed directly in its own written key, ready to play. Tenor reads its part in Bb, alto reads its own in Eb, and nobody needs to transpose anything live during the gig.

It's very different for a musician playing from a chart or by ear: a jam, a pop-rock band, a song accompanied from a plain chord sheet in concert pitch. There, nobody has prepared a transposed part in advance, and it's up to the saxophonist to convert the chart before playing, or to do it mentally in real time once they know their transposition interval well. A purely theoretical guide can sometimes suggest that every saxophonist is constantly recalculating: in reality, those who mostly live off written scores almost never have to, while those who play by ear or from a chart need to have it down cold, with no safety net.

Playing alongside a pianist or guitarist: the habit to build in the moment

On stage or in rehearsal, the key that gets passed around the band is almost always concert pitch: it's what the pianist or guitarist calls out, matching what everyone actually hears. A saxophonist who reads their part in that same key will systematically play the wrong notes, since their instrument doesn't produce what's written.

The habit to build is to always convert: take the concert key the rest of the band is using, mentally add your own interval, a whole tone on tenor, a major sixth on alto, and transpose the chart before you play, key signature included, not just the chord names one by one. Common pitfalls to avoid
