How a capo works, mechanically
A capo is an accessory made of two parts: a bar that presses the strings down against a fret, and a clamping mechanism that holds that pressure in place. Once fitted, it plays exactly the role of a movable nut: the fixed nut, at the end of the neck near the tuning pegs, normally marks the starting point of the vibrating part of the strings; the capo moves that starting point further up the neck, to wherever it is placed. By shortening the portion of string that actually vibrates, it mechanically raises the pitch produced by each open string, exactly as a finger does when it presses a string down on a fret without a capo.
This shortening follows a simple, perfectly regular rule: each fret on the neck is worth one half step, the smallest pitch interval used in Western music. A history that starts long before the modern guitar
The word capodastre comes from the Italian capotasto, literally the head of the fingerboard, a term already recorded in 1640 by the Italian musicologist Giovanni Battista Doni to describe the nut of a viola da gamba. But the movable object we know today took more than another century to appear: the first physical capos, in the mid-18th century, were simple bent pieces of brass, shaped like a C, tightened by hand around the neck with no tension adjustment at all.
The end of the 18th century saw two families of mechanisms appear almost at the same time, and both still exist today in one form or another. In England, a screw-tightened model appeared, known as the yoke style, where a simple thumbscrew adjusted the pressure. In Spain, classical and flamenco guitarists adopted the cejilla, a device made entirely of wood and leather: a wooden bar pressed down by a leather strap, tightened by turning a small wooden peg, a tourniquet principle rather than a threaded screw. The cejilla is still used today in flamenco playing, where it also slightly raises the string height to make first-position playing easier, on top of transposing.
The first officially recorded American patent for a capodastre goes to James Ashborn, an instrument maker from Wolcottville, Connecticut, in 1850: his design used a wooden cylinder pressed by a brass screw. The object's popularity then grew slowly but steadily: by the mid-1890s, the American mail-order catalogues Sears and Montgomery Ward were listing several capo models for a few tens of cents apiece, marketed as accessories that made playing in flat keys easier.
The 20th century: an explosion of modern mechanisms
It was in the 20th century that the capo truly diversified, carried by the rise of the guitar as an instrument for accompanying the voice, first in folk music and then in pop-rock. In 1931, the American W. H. Russell patented an elastic strap capo: a stretchable fabric band, fitted with several eyelets, wraps around the neck and presses a padded bar onto the strings, with no mechanical adjustment at all. Simple and cheap, this design remains one of the most common among beginners today, notably in updated forms sold as Nashville-style capos.
The following decades brought the mechanisms that dominate the market today. In the 1960s, the Jim Dunlop brand released a lever-action capo, whose original design was reportedly inspired, according to several brand histories, by a spring-loaded clothespin: a handle you squeeze to open the jaw, then release to clamp it shut on the strings. In 1974, banjo player Rick Shubb worked out, with mechanic Dave Coontz, a first screw-tightened capo for the five-string banjo, before launching his guitar version in 1979, an adjustable screw model protected by a patent filed the previous year and designed from the outset to minimise tuning problems as much as possible. Around 1980, Texan Milton Kyser launched his own Kyser Quick-Change, a spring capo with side handles that goes on and off in a single motion; its jaw mechanism remains, even today, very close to its original form across most manufacturers.
The search for perfect intonation kept going well after these founding designs. In 2007, the British brand G7th introduced a capo with a calibrated-tension mechanism, specifically built to apply the same minimal pressure to every string rather than a uniform, often excessive clamp, aimed directly at reducing the tuning problems inherited from older designs. Other manufacturers pushed the hybridisation even further: in 2011, the company Intellitouch released a capo with a built-in chromatic tuner, designed to check the instrument's intonation at the very moment the capo goes on, with no separate accessory needed. These recent developments show that a century and a half after Ashborn's patent, the capo's central problem remains exactly the same: apply just enough pressure, and not an ounce more.
The main types of capo today

Beyond the clamping mechanism itself, one detail changes a great deal about the quality of contact with the strings: the shape of the pad that touches them. A guitar neck is not flat; it has a slight curve called the fingerboard radius. A flat, hard-rubber pad then only makes proper contact with the middle strings, pressing the outer strings too hard or not hard enough. The best-designed models use a curved pad, in silicone or foam, whose curvature is specifically calculated to match the target neck's radius, which spreads the pressure far more evenly across all six strings.
On today's market, each family remains associated with a few historic brands that largely defined its standard: the Kyser name is tied to the mass-market spring capo, Shubb to the adjustable screw capo, Dunlop to the lever inherited from the clothespin, and G7th to the most recent mechanisms built around intonation. None of these brands holds a mechanism so proprietary that it keeps out competition: most accessory makers today offer a version of each of the four families.
Between these four families, no single choice is objectively better than the others: a guitarist who often changes key mid-song on stage will favour the speed of a spring model; a studio guitarist who fits the capo once and does not touch it again for an entire take will more likely benefit from the precision of a screw or adjustable-lever model. The elastic strap capo remains the most affordable choice for starting out, with room to switch once you have identified your own playing habits.
Choosing a position to simplify difficult chords
Beyond the voice, the most concrete everyday reason to use a capo is to replace tricky barre chords with open shapes the left hand already knows by heart. Certain keys, such as those built on F#, B, or Eb, offer no simple open shape at all: without a capo, you have to play almost exclusively in barre chords there, which demands strength and precision in the wrist. By placing the capo at the right fret, those same keys become playable with open shapes of C, G, D, A, or E, far more comfortable for a hand that has not yet built up much endurance.

This logic works both ways: either you start from a key someone else has already fixed, for instance because another musician in the band set it, and you look for the capo fret that lets you play it with the simplest possible shapes; or you start from the shapes you already know, and you move the capo until you land on the vocal pitch you want. Why a capo can throw a guitar out of tune

Positioning and fitting a capo correctly
The correct move comes down to one simple rule: the capo always goes just behind the metal fret bar that marks the target fret, never in the middle of the fret space and never directly on the fret bar itself. The idea dates back to 1976, when the American Lyle Shabram designed a first model called the Chord-Forming Capo; musicians Harvey Reid and Jeff Hickey soon renamed it the Third Hand Capo and helped popularise the idea in the folk and fingerstyle scene. The practical advantage, compared with a true open tuning where you loosen and retighten several tuning pegs, is speed and reversibility: a partial capo goes on and comes off in seconds, without ever pulling the instrument away from its standard reference tuning. This is especially handy in rehearsal or a writing session, when you want to quickly test an open-string sound on a single passage before immediately going back to ordinary playing, without going through the full retuning process a real tuning change would require.
The capo in a band and on stage
In a band, a capo is often used to let two guitars coexist without literally playing the same notes at the same frets. Two guitarists who place their capos at different frets, while playing different chord shapes that sound the same real key, get a richer result than doubling the exact same part: the open strings and the shape positions never line up perfectly, which naturally widens the overall sound of the pair. It is a genuine arranging technique in its own right, used just as much in the studio as on stage.
Which fret you choose also has a direct effect on tone, not just pitch: the higher the capo moves toward the treble side of the neck, the shorter the still-vibrating portion of string becomes, and the brighter and clearer the sound gets, at the expense of low end and sustain. Many guitarists also keep a spare capo clipped permanently to the headstock, between the tuning pegs, ready to slide onto the neck in one motion the moment the next song calls for it, rather than having to dig for it in a pocket or case between numbers.
In the studio, the same logic serves a different goal: two acoustic guitar takes recorded over the same progression, but with capos at different frets and different chord shapes sounding the same real key, then mixed side by side, give a much wider stereo image than simply doubling the same take. One last point is worth repeating against a stubborn misconception: using a capo is in no way a sign of weak technique. Professional guitarists of every style use it routinely, in the studio as much as on stage, as much for the tonal richness it brings as for ease of playing, exactly as a pianist's choice of key says nothing about their skill.
