The seven modes of the major scale, in brief
The major scale always follows the same interval formula, covered in detail in the guide on major and minor scales: a whole step, a whole step, a half step, a whole step, a whole step, a whole step, a half step. A mode is that same run of seven notes, but played starting from a different degree: the tonic moves, while the notes that make up the scale stay identical. C major therefore yields seven possible modes depending on which starting note is chosen among C, D, E, F, G, A and B, each with its own color, even though none of these seven scales contains a single note different from the other six.
These seven modes carry names inherited from ancient Greek music theory, numbered in the order of the degrees of the major scale: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian. Ionian, which starts on the first degree, is simply the major scale itself; Aeolian, which starts on the sixth degree, is the natural minor scale, already covered in the guide on scales. The five remaining modes each share the notes of their parent major scale, but with a different tonic and therefore a different color.
Phrygian, Lydian and Locrian stay noticeably rarer in practice than Dorian and Mixolydian: Phrygian and Lydian need a particular harmonic context to sound their best, and Locrian rests on an unstable tonic chord, a diminished fifth, which keeps it from serving as the basis for a static vamp the way the other modes can. One simple takeaway comes out of this table: each mode differs from the next by only one note shifted by a half step, and it's precisely that note, specific to each mode, that carries its whole color. For Dorian and Mixolydian, the next two sections spell out exactly which one.
Dorian in depth: a brighter minor color
The Dorian mode starts on the second degree of the major scale. Its interval formula, a whole step, a half step, a whole step, a whole step, a whole step, a half step, a whole step, differs from that of the natural minor scale on only one point: the sixth, major in Dorian rather than minor. Every other note, the tonic, second, minor third, fourth, fifth and minor seventh, stays exactly the same in both scales.
E Dorian, for example, uses exactly the same notes as D major starting from E, namely E, F sharp, G, A, B, C sharp, D. In E natural minor, the relative scale of G major, that same sixth would be a C natural instead of a C sharp; that's the only difference between the two scales, yet it changes the whole character of the sound.
That major sixth is Dorian's characteristic note, the one that marks its sonic identity apart from the natural minor scale as soon as it's heard. Dorian keeps the minor third that gives it its overall minor color, but the sixth raised by a half step brings a clarity, a brightness that the natural minor scale lacks: Dorian sounds minor without sounding melancholic, more open, less heavy. It's this particular tension, between a minor foundation and a sixth borrowed from the major world, that explains why so many improvisers reach for it over the natural minor scale whenever the harmonic context allows it.

Which chord or vamp to use Dorian over
The most reliable cue for choosing Dorian is the nature of the chord you're soloing over. Dorian fits a minor 7 chord, a chord that stacks the tonic, minor third, fifth and minor seventh: those are precisely the four most useful notes of the scale, and Dorian's major sixth sits on top of them as a natural extension, often written as a thirteenth on a jazz chart. Over a plain minor chord with no sixth specified, playing that major sixth remains a coherent choice since it never contradicts a note already present in the chord.
Dorian works especially well against a modal vamp: a single minor 7 chord, or an alternation between two very close chords, held for several bars, even several minutes, without ever moving to another harmonic center. In that setting there's no resolution to prepare for and no new chord to anticipate; the improviser can focus entirely on melodic and rhythmic exploration of a single color.
This kind of static vamp developed in a particularly marked way in jazz from the late 1950s onward, when a movement began deliberately slowing down the pace of chord changes: where common practice up to then had often strung together a new chord every two beats, forcing the improviser to keep landing on their feet harmonically, this movement instead preferred to hold a single chord or a single mode for sixteen, even thirty-two bars in a row, giving the melodic line time to develop without the constraint of constant change. Dorian, with its bright minor color, became one of the go-to modes of that approach.
Outside jazz, Dorian shows up just as often in funk, where grooves often rest on a single minor 7 chord looped over and over while the emphasis falls on rhythm and groove rather than harmonic motion, and in progressive rock, which favors long instrumental sections built on a sustained modal vamp. In all three cases the common thread is the same: a chord that stays still long enough for the color of the mode, rather than the sequence of chords, to become the main subject of the improvisation.
Mixolydian in depth: a bluesy major color
The Mixolydian mode starts on the fifth degree of the major scale. Its interval formula, a whole step, a whole step, a half step, a whole step, a whole step, a half step, a whole step, differs from that of the major scale itself on only one point: the seventh, minor in Mixolydian rather than major. Every other note, the tonic, second, major third, fourth, fifth and sixth, stays exactly identical between the two scales.
C Mixolydian, for example, uses exactly the same notes as F major starting from C, namely C, D, E, F, G, A, B flat. In C major, that same seventh would be a B natural instead of a B flat; that's the only difference between the two scales, yet it's enough to completely change the color of the whole thing.

Mixolydian keeps the major third that gives it its overall major, open color, but the seventh lowered by a half step removes the leading tone found in the Ionian mode and replaces it with a slightly rough, less crisp color, often described as bluesy. It's a major-family mode that doesn't pull toward its tonic with the same urgency as the classic major scale, which makes it especially suited to an improvisation that stays put rather than one in a hurry to reach a resolution.

Which chord or vamp to use Mixolydian over, and its link to the blues
Mixolydian fits directly over the notes of a dominant 7 chord, a chord that stacks the tonic, major third, fifth and minor seventh: those are exactly the four most important notes of the scale, and the common extensions of that chord, the ninth, eleventh or thirteenth, correspond respectively to the second, fourth and sixth of the mode. Over a dominant chord marked 7, 9 or 13, Mixolydian therefore supplies a set of notes that never contradicts the underlying harmony.
One nuance is worth knowing: Mixolydian's fourth forms a half step against the major third of the dominant chord, a clash sharp enough that it sounds better as a quick passing note, between two more stable notes, than as a point held for a long time. Jazz players sometimes even call it the note to avoid over that kind of chord, not because it's forbidden, but because it needs to be handled with more care than the mode's other degrees.
Mixolydian's link to the blues comes from the very nature of the most common blues progression, which strings together dominant 7 chords almost exclusively on its first, fourth and fifth degrees, whereas a classic progression in a major key would only use a dominant chord on a single degree, the fifth, right before the resolution. This constant presence of the dominant chord throughout the blues explains why Mixolydian, or a variant that blends it with the so-called blues scale, finds such natural footing there.
Mixolydian turns up for the same reasons in rock, blues-rock and funk, whenever a song or a section settles onto a single dominant 7 chord held as a vamp rather than following a progression that resolves toward a tonic. The principle stays the same as Dorian over a minor chord: the longer the chord stays still, the more room the mode's own color has to settle into the listener's ear.
Modal harmony versus functional harmony
Functional harmony, the most widespread kind in tonal music, strings together chords that build tension and seek to resolve it: each chord sets up the next, until a cadence closes the phrase back onto the tonic. Improvising over functional harmony means following that motion: anticipating the next chord, targeting its most characteristic notes at the right moment, riding the tension and release the progression itself sets up.

There's nothing to anticipate since nothing changes; the color of the chosen mode, Dorian or Mixolydian for instance, becomes the actual subject of the improvisation, rather than mere dressing over a moving progression. This distinction changes how you improvise in a very concrete way. Over functional harmony, the same note can be perfectly consonant on one chord and dissonant two beats later on the next, which requires adjusting your playing chord by chord. Over a modal vamp, the same scale stays valid from start to finish of the passage: the challenge is no longer following the changes, but avoiding a solo that turns monotonous for lack of harmonic motion to keep it moving, which pushes you to work harder on rhythm, dynamics and phrase-building to hold interest.
Finding a mode's notes from a major scale you already know
Since every mode shares the notes of its parent major scale, the fastest way to find a mode's notes is never to memorize a new list of notes, but to identify that parent scale and simply shift the tonic. For Dorian, the method is direct: a Dorian tonic always sits on the second degree of its parent major scale, in other words a whole step below it. To play in E Dorian, just step down a whole tone to D, build D major, and replay exactly those same notes starting back from E as the point of reference. No accidental changes, only the tonic shifts.
For Mixolydian, the reasoning mirrors it: a Mixolydian tonic always sits on the fifth degree of its parent major scale, in other words a perfect fifth below it, or, which comes to the same thing, a perfect fourth above it. To play in C Mixolydian, just step down a fifth to F, build F major, and replay those same notes starting back from C.

Improvising over a modal vamp: anchor notes and passing notes
Faced with a modal vamp that doesn't move, the main risk isn't hitting a wrong note, since every note of the mode remains theoretically available, but losing the mode's own color by letting your ear fall back on a more familiar scale out of habit. The most reliable safeguard is to treat two notes as preferred anchor points: the tonic, which grounds the mode, and its characteristic note, the major sixth for Dorian, the minor seventh for Mixolydian. Coming back regularly to these two notes, especially at the end of a phrase or on a strong beat, clearly asserts the chosen mode to the listener's ear.
The scale's other degrees function more as passing notes, useful for connecting the anchor points to each other or for building a brief tension before resolving into them, rather than as destinations in their own right. That's especially true for Mixolydian's fourth, mentioned above, which rubs against the major third of the dominant chord and works better kept brief rather than held.
A good habit for keeping an improvisation from turning into a plain recitation of the scale from bottom to top is to start from a short rhythmic cell, just a few notes, and repeat it while shifting it slightly in pitch, rather than mechanically running through the seven degrees in order. That varied repetition gives the ear time to properly absorb the mode's color, whereas a scale played note by note from low to high mostly sounds like a technical exercise, not an improvisation that tells you something.
Finally, over a vamp that lasts several minutes with no chord change at all, varying register, intensity and rhythmic placement of phrases becomes just as important as the choice of notes themselves: it's often this work on shape, more than on pitch, that sets an interesting modal improvisation apart from one that runs out of steam.
The other modes at a glance: Phrygian, Lydian and Locrian
Phrygian starts on the third degree of the major scale. Compared to the natural minor scale, it too changes only one note, but in a different spot: the second, minor instead of major, which brings the tonic and the note just above it a mere half step apart. That tightened second gives Phrygian a dark, tense color, sometimes described as exotic, found in certain Mediterranean traditional musics as much as in more modern styles reaching for an unusual minor color.
Lydian starts on the fourth degree. Compared to the major scale itself, it changes only one note: the fourth, augmented instead of perfect, which sets it apart from the tonic by an interval of three whole tones. That augmented fourth gives Lydian a major but floating color, less grounded than the classic major scale, often described as dreamy or suspended, the opposite of the stability a perfect fourth usually provides.
Locrian, finally, starts on the seventh degree. It's the only one of the seven modes whose tonic chord is neither major nor minor, but diminished: its fifth, reduced by a half step from a perfect fifth, makes the chord built on its tonic unstable by nature, since a diminished chord never delivers the sense of rest that major or minor chords do. That underlying instability explains why Locrian rarely serves as the basis for a static vamp the way Dorian or Mixolydian do: it turns up mostly briefly, over a half-diminished chord, for instance on the second degree of a minor key right before a cadence, rather than as the main color of an extended improvisation.
