Major and minor pentatonic scales

The major pentatonic scale and the minor pentatonic scale are both built by removing two specific notes from their seven-note parent scale, the major scale and the natural minor scale, and those two notes are never a random pick: in each case, they are exactly the two notes that carried the parent scale's only two semitones. Once those two degrees are removed, no remaining pair of pentatonic notes forms either a semitone or a tritone, the two most unstable intervals in Western harmony, which is why almost any combination of these five notes sounds right, even improvised fast and without thinking. The minor pentatonic shares exactly the same notes as the major pentatonic of its relative key, just like the full scales they both derive from. On a guitar or bass fretboard, these five notes fall into five movable positions that overlap and cover the whole neck before repeating identically an octave higher. Adding a single chromatic note between the fourth and fifth degrees of the minor pentatonic, the blue note, produces the blues scale, a six-note scale born from nineteenth-century African-American vocal traditions. Choosing between the major and minor pentatonic against a chord chart depends first on the third of the chord being played at that moment, major or minor, far more than on any stylistic preference.

What is a pentatonic scale? A history bigger than the blues

A pentatonic scale is simply a scale built on five notes per octave, where the major scale or the natural minor scale, covered in detail in the Music Hub guide "Major and minor scales to get off to a good start," use seven. The term actually covers a whole family of scales found around the world, but this guide focuses on the two forms most played on guitar, on bass and in Western improvisation: the major pentatonic and the minor pentatonic, mirror images of each other that share one precise property, a total absence of semitones between any two of their notes. Comparative musicology files this type of scale under the so-called anhemitonic category, as opposed to hemitonic pentatonic scales, which do contain one or more semitones, such as certain traditional Japanese modes played on the shamisen or the koto: not every pentatonic scale in the world looks alike note for note, and the one described here is only one precise family among others.

This anhemitonic family is no recent curiosity and no invention of blues or rock: it turns up, in a range of local forms, across an overwhelming share of the world's traditional music, often centuries or even millennia before the electric guitar ever existed. It appears in Celtic folklore, in Hungarian folklore, in the huayno songs of the Andes, in Indonesian gamelan, across much of Native American music and across a large part of West African music, which is itself the direct ancestor of African-American spirituals, blues and jazz. This convergence between largely independent cultures suggests that a five-note structure with no semitone is something particularly natural to the human ear for building a melody, well beyond any single genre or cultural area.

Building the major pentatonic: the two degrees removed, and why those two

The classic major scale, covered in detail in the Music Hub guide on major and minor scales, always places its only two semitones in the same spots: between the third and fourth degrees, then between the seventh degree and the tonic of the next octave. The major pentatonic is obtained by removing precisely the two notes that carry those semitones, the fourth and seventh degrees, keeping only the other five: the first, second, third, fifth and sixth. In C major, C D E F G A B, that means dropping F and B to keep only C, D, E, G, A.

This choice is not arbitrary in the slightest, even though guitar methods rarely present it that way, teaching the scale mostly as a shape of fretboard dots to memorise. Removing the fourth and seventh degrees also removes, in the same stroke, the only two spots where the major scale narrows the gap between two neighbouring notes down to a single semitone. What is left are only whole-tone gaps or minor-third gaps, a tone and a half, between each note and the next: C to D a tone, D to E a tone, E to G a minor third, G to A a tone, A to C a minor third. No pair of adjacent notes rubs against another by a bare semitone any more, which is precisely the source of this scale's highly forgiving character, detailed further down.

Building the minor pentatonic: the same logic, on the minor side

The natural minor scale follows its own formula, a tone, a semitone, a tone, a tone, a semitone, a tone, a tone, with its two semitones sitting between the second and third degrees, then between the fifth and sixth. The minor pentatonic applies exactly the same logic as the major, but at these two narrowing points that belong to it: it removes the second and sixth degrees of the natural minor, keeping only the first, third, fourth, fifth and seventh. In A minor, A B C D E F G, that means dropping B and F to keep only A, C, D, E, G.

Seen through the lens of major-scale theory rather than natural-minor theory, this same scale is more commonly written as root, minor third, fourth, fifth, minor seventh: that is the formula found in almost every guitar, bass and harmonica method, because it lets you compare the minor pentatonic directly to the chord or the chord chart you are about to play it over. Both spellings describe rigorously the same five notes; only the seven-note reference scale used to name them changes. The major scale drops its fourth and seventh degrees, the natural minor drops its second and sixth: in both cases, these are precisely the two degrees that carried a semitone in the parent scale, never some other pair picked at random.

The table above lines up the construction of the major and the minor side by side to make the parallel clear: in both families, it is always the semitone-carrying degrees that disappear, never any others.

Why it always sounds right: no semitones, no tritones

What makes the pentatonic scale so forgiving to improvise over comes from a property the previous construction already reveals: removing the two semitone-carrying notes also removes, in the same stroke, any risk of a tritone, the three-whole-tone interval that remains, in Western tonal harmony, the most unstable and the hardest to make sound consonant. Taking the five notes of C major pentatonic, C, D, E, G, A, and working out the gap between every possible pair, none of the ten combinations reaches either a semitone or a tritone: you only find whole tones or minor thirds. This holds for the full set of five notes taken two at a time, not only for neighbouring notes in scale order, which is why jumping from one note to another, even outside that usual order, still sounds right.

This same absence of semitones and tritones also shows up by a completely different route, that of the circle of fifths detailed in the Music Hub guide on keys and key signatures: stacking four consecutive perfect fifths from a tonic, C, G, D, A, E, then folding those five notes back inside a single octave, lands you exactly on the five notes of C major pentatonic. That is no coincidence: the perfect fifth is, together with the octave, the most stable and consonant interval in the whole tonal system, and a scale built purely from stacked fifths cannot structurally contain a semitone or a tritone between its notes. This same stacking of fifths also explains why the pentatonic scale sits so easily over chords that are otherwise very different from one another: it never leans on the harshest tension Western harmony can produce.

The relative-key relationship: same notes, different resting point

The minor pentatonic keeps exactly the same relationship with its relative major pentatonic as the natural minor scale keeps with its relative major, detailed in the guide on major and minor scales: same notes, only the tonic changes. A minor pentatonic, A C D E G, and C major pentatonic, C D E G A, are therefore rigorously the same collection of five notes, only reordered around a different starting point. This is no isolated coincidence: since the minor pentatonic is built by removing the second and sixth degrees of the natural minor, and that natural minor already shares all its notes with its relative major, the resulting pentatonic necessarily also shares exactly the same five notes as the matching major pentatonic.

In practical terms, this relationship means learning a single collection of five notes on the fretboard gives access to two scales at once, provided you know which tonic you are landing on. A guitarist who knows the A minor pentatonic position plays, without moving a single fret, exactly the notes of C major pentatonic: only the spot where the ear and the phrasing place the resting point changes. Finding the relative of a pentatonic follows the same rule as for the full scales: you go down a minor third below the major tonic, or, the other way round, up a minor third from the minor tonic to find its relative major.

The five positions on the guitar fretboard

On a guitar or bass fretboard, the five pentatonic notes are never played in a single zone: they spread across five fingering patterns that follow on from one another and overlap from one end of the neck to the other, each one starting from a different scale degree on the lowest string. The first position starts with the tonic itself on that string; the next position starts a few frets higher, on the next scale degree, and so on up to the fifth position, after which the first pattern comes back identically, an octave higher up the neck. Five positions are therefore enough, by the most widespread convention, to cover the whole playable neck, with no need for a sixth shape.

This split into five movable blocks owes a lot to the so-called CAGED system, inherited from the five open chord shapes C, A, G, E, D, which likewise arranges the neck into five zones that always follow the same letter order going up, before returning to the first shape an octave higher. Each pentatonic position sits fairly naturally over one of these five chord shapes, which lets you link a scale position directly to the chord it dresses up.

Because the minor pentatonic and its relative major pentatonic share, as seen above, rigorously the same five notes, these five positions are also, physically, the same five shapes on the neck for both scales: only the fret that the ear and the phrasing treat as the resting point, the tonic, changes. The main benefit of knowing all five positions rather than just one, in fact, is not being able to play higher or lower, but being able to switch position in the middle of a phrase, without dropping back to the starting position, to take advantage of a more comfortable fingering or a different tone colour in another part of the neck. A beginner who stays locked into their very first position, often because it is the only one they have memorised, misses out on a good deal of the expressiveness the instrument allows.

The blue note: when the minor pentatonic becomes the blues scale

The minor pentatonic becomes the blues scale by the addition of a single extra note, inserted between the fourth and fifth degrees: a diminished fifth, the very tritone the pentatonic so carefully avoids by construction, reintroduced here on purpose for its expressive effect rather than avoided for stability. This note carries its own name in African-American tradition, the blue note, and its presence takes the scale from five notes to six: root, minor third, fourth, diminished fifth, fifth, minor seventh.

The term blue note did not, originally, refer to a fixed, exact pitch that Western notation could capture without remainder. The blue notes, the flattened third, fifth and seventh, grew out of the vocal practices of nineteenth-century African-American workers in the American South, spirituals, work songs and hollers, which slid certain notes between two pitches of Western equal temperament rather than settling on either one. A genuine blue note therefore often sits somewhere between two semitones on the piano, a space that only singing, guitar bending or certain wind instruments like the harmonica can render faithfully, whereas a tempered keyboard has no choice but to commit to one of the two neighbouring notes.

The history of the word itself reaches back further than music: the English phrase blue devil, a demon supposedly causing melancholy, is attested as early as the fifteenth century, long before it gave rise to blues as a synonym for low spirits, and then to the musical term derived from it. Lexicographic research traces the very first written mention of a blue note to an 1895 American newspaper article, but it is above all the publication of the sheet music for Memphis Blues by composer William Christopher Handy, in 1912, that is considered one of the first to explicitly notate these flattened thirds and sevenths, helping fix the concept in written musical vocabulary; the term blue note itself only appears in a standardised form in sources around 1919. Playing the flattened fifth of the blues scale as a fixed, never-inflected note, with no slide or bend, therefore amounts to pinning to paper a vocal gesture that, originally, was precisely never meant to sit still.

A worldwide history, far bigger than the blues

The history of the pentatonic scale reaches far beyond blues and rock, which are, on the scale of this history, only a recent episode. The oldest attested Chinese system organises five notes, gong, shang, jue, zhi and yu, in successive fifths going back more than 2,600 years, as early as the so-called Spring and Autumn period; each note there also corresponds to a whole cosmology, five elements, earth, metal, wood, fire and water, but also five planets, five seasons, five cardinal directions and five virtues, a system of correspondences far older than any Western notation of tones and semitones. Traditional Chinese instruments such as the guzheng, a plucked table zither, or the dizi, a bamboo flute, are still tuned today to this same five-note scale.

This universality is not limited to East Asia. Celtic folklore, Hungarian folklore, Indonesian gamelan, the huayno songs of the Andes, and much of Native American and West African music share, each in its own way, this same preference for five-note collections with no tight semitone. This convergence, observed among cultures that historically had no direct contact with one another, has fed the long-standing hypothesis that the anhemitonic pentatonic represents a particularly stable and natural stage in building a melody, arrived at independently by musicians separated by oceans and millennia rather than spread outward from a single source.

Not every traditional pentatonic scale looks alike note for note, though: certain Japanese modes played on the koto or the shamisen contain, on the contrary, one or more semitones, which classes them, in comparative musicology, among hemitonic rather than anhemitonic pentatonic scales. The major and minor pair described in this guide, inherited from Western blues, jazz and rock, is therefore just one of the many variants the pentatonic scale has taken around the world, the most widespread in the repertoire the Music Hub covers, but not the only one that exists.

How to choose your pentatonic against a chord chart

The most reliable guide for choosing between the major and minor pentatonic over a chord chart remains the nature of the chord being played at that particular moment, well ahead of any stylistic preference. Against a chord or a chart that is clearly major, backed by a major third, the major pentatonic of the same tonic naturally fits the chord tones; against a chord or chart that is clearly minor, backed by a minor third, the minor pentatonic of that same tonic is the first instinct. Playing a major pentatonic over a minor chord, or the other way round, immediately produces the clash of a major third against a minor third, one of the most recognisable clashes to the ear in improvisation.

Classic blues deliberately blurs this guide: its chart almost always strings together dominant seventh chords on its first, fourth and fifth degrees, as detailed in the Music Hub guide on the 12-bar blues chart, while the melody and the improvisation stay built on the minor pentatonic of the tune's tonic from start to finish, never tracking the chords one by one. This tolerance comes down to the very ambiguity of the third in blues, the pentatonic's minor third and the dominant chord's major third coexisting without ever really contradicting each other, one of the reasons this single scale can dress an entire blues chart without changing it once.

Outside of blues, a useful instinct when facing a pop or rock chart that broadly stays in a single key is to choose the pentatonic, major or minor, of that overall key rather than switching scale on every chord: since the major pentatonic and its relative minor cover exactly the same five notes, as seen above, the choice between the two mostly comes down to where the improvisation chooses to set its resting point, not to a separate calculation for every chord in the chart.

Common pitfalls to avoid

MistakeBelieving a pentatonic scale is just any random run of five notes picked out of a seven-note scale.

Why — The two notes removed are never a free choice: they are precisely the ones carrying the parent scale's only two semitones, whether major or natural minor. Removing two different notes at random would leave one or more semitones in the resulting scale, losing exactly the property that makes the pentatonic so forgiving to improvise over.

Do this instead : Rebuild the scale degree by degree from the formula, first locating where the parent scale's two semitones fall, before deciding which degrees to remove.

MistakeTreating the minor pentatonic and its relative major pentatonic as two separate pools of notes to be learned separately on the fretboard.

Why — The two scales share rigorously the same five notes, exactly like a natural minor scale and its relative major. Learning them as two separate shapes doubles a memorisation effort that, in reality, has nothing to double.

Do this instead : Learn a single collection of five notes per position, then practise locating the two possible tonics on it, the major and its relative minor, rather than treating them as two separate fingerings.

MistakePlaying the flattened fifth of the blues scale as a fixed note, never bent or slid, exactly like the scale's other degrees.

Why — The blue note grew out of an African-American vocal inflection sliding between two pitches of equal temperament, not out of a fixed pitch assigned to a single fret or key. Playing it strictly in place, with no pitch movement at all, erases the expressiveness that gives it its name and its meaning.

Do this instead : Work on bending or sliding this specific note rather than treating it like the scale's other degrees, to recapture the original vocal intent.

MistakeStaying stuck in a single fretboard position, usually the very first one learned, and never linking into the neighbouring positions.

Why — The five positions overlap and together cover the whole neck; sticking to just one artificially limits the available register and prevents taking advantage of a more comfortable fingering or a different tone colour depending on the area of the neck.

Do this instead : Practise moving from one position into the neighbouring one in the middle of a phrase, without dropping back to the starting position, until the switch becomes a reflex.
