After Dorian and Mixolydian, four more modes round out the seven derived from the major scale. Lydian starts on the fourth degree and changes only one note compared to the major scale: its fourth, augmented instead of perfect, which strips away any pull toward the third and gives it a suspended color, used over a major 7 chord with the augmented fourth foregrounded, especially in film music and among certain rock or fusion guitarists. The guide on Dorian and Mixolydian lays the groundwork this one builds on: what the seven modes of the major scale are, how each is built by starting from a different degree of the same parent scale, and the difference between modal harmony, which holds a static chord, and functional harmony, which strings chords together toward a resolution. This guide picks up where the other one left off: Dorian and Mixolydian were covered there in depth, while the three remaining modes, Phrygian, Lydian and Locrian, only got a single overview section, with Aeolian mentioned in passing as the already-familiar natural minor scale. That split wasn't arbitrary: Dorian and Mixolydian are the modes used most outside the classic major and minor scales, because each differs from a scale you already know by just one note and each fits a very common seventh chord. Lydian, Phrygian and Locrian need a more specific harmonic setting to sound right, which is why they stay rarer in practice, though no less real: each has its own repertoire, its own identifiable color, and a context where it becomes the obvious choice rather than a theoretical curiosity.

Lydian in depth: the augmented fourth that makes the key float

The Lydian mode starts on the fourth degree of the major scale. Its interval formula, a whole step, a whole step, a whole step, a half step, a whole step, a whole step, a half step, differs from that of the major scale itself on only one point: the fourth, augmented instead of perfect. Every other note, the tonic, second, major third, fifth, sixth and major seventh, stays exactly identical between the two scales.

F Lydian, for example, uses exactly the same notes as C major starting from F, namely F, G, A, B, C, D, E. In F major, that same fourth would be a B flat instead of a B natural; that's the only difference between the two scales, yet it's enough to completely change the sense of motion within the key.

That augmented fourth is Lydian's characteristic note. In the classic major scale, the perfect fourth sits only a half step away from the major third: that friction creates a slight melodic tension, a faint pull toward resolving onto the third, subtle enough that it's rarely noticed consciously, yet it shapes much of everyday tonal language. Lydian's augmented fourth sits a whole step away from the major third instead of a half step: that friction disappears, and with it the tension that pulled the melody toward a precise point of resolution. The result is a major scale that keeps all its clarity, its major third and its open color, but without that faint inner pull: it seems to float rather than move toward a destination, a quality many musicians and composers describe as suspended, airy or dreamlike.

That absence of pull fed an influential theoretical claim in jazz. In his book Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization, published in 1953 and reworked over nearly fifty years, theorist and composer George Russell argued that Lydian, rather than the classic major scale, is the scale that follows most directly from the natural harmonic series. His reasoning starts from stacking successive perfect fifths on top of a tonic: six stacked fifths, folded back down into a single octave and put in order, produce exactly the notes of the Lydian mode, augmented fourth included, rather than those of the Ionian major scale. Whether or not one follows that claim all the way through, it accounts for part of Lydian's lasting influence on modal jazz improvisation from the late 1950s onward.

Which chord or vamp to use Lydian over, and why it sounds like film music

The most reliable cue for settling into Lydian, as with the other modes, is the nature of the chord or vamp you're improvising over. Lydian fits a major 7 chord with the augmented fourth foregrounded, most often written as maj7#11 on a jazz or film-score chart: that chord stacks the tonic, major third, fifth, major seventh and augmented eleventh, the last of these being nothing more than the mode's augmented fourth carried up an octave. Over a plain major 7 chord with no eleventh specified, bringing out that augmented fourth in the melody remains a coherent choice, as long as it isn't played in direct clash with a third held in the bass or another part.

Lydian works especially well over a static major vamp, a chord or an alternation between two very close chords held for several bars with no movement toward a resolution, exactly like Dorian or Mixolydian covered in the previous guide, but with a major color instead of a minor or bluesy one.

It's precisely that static ground that explains why Lydian became one of film music's go-to modes. A composer who needs to establish a sense of wonder, mystery or soaring flight, without pushing the action forward harmonically, finds in Lydian's augmented fourth a major color that never closes the phrase back on itself. John Williams's use of it is particularly well documented: the main theme from Superman leans on that raised fourth to carry a sense of heroic optimism and flight, and Yoda's theme in the Star Wars saga introduces the character in Lydian before the same motif is heard in the classic major scale a little later, a contrast that immediately sets up a feeling of mystery and otherness.

Lydian found a second favorite home on electric guitar starting in the 1980s, when virtuoso guitarists associated with the shred movement, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai chief among them, picked it up for its unusual, instantly recognizable sound. It also turns up more broadly in progressive rock and jazz fusion, whenever an instrumental section is after a major color that doesn't pull toward any particular resolution.

Phrygian in depth: the minor second and its dark color

The Phrygian mode starts on the third degree of the major scale. Its interval formula, a half step, a whole step, a whole step, a whole step, a half step, a whole step, a whole step, differs from that of the natural minor scale on only one point: the second, minor instead of major. Every other note, the tonic, minor third, fourth, fifth, minor sixth and minor seventh, stays exactly identical between the two scales.

E Phrygian, for example, uses exactly the same notes as C major starting from E, namely E, F, G, A, B, C, D. In E natural minor, the relative scale of G major, that same second would be an F sharp instead of an F natural; that's the only difference between the two scales, yet it radically changes the character of the whole thing.

That minor second, a mere half step above the tonic, is Phrygian's characteristic note. It's the tightest possible interval between two neighboring degrees of a scale, and that tightness right above the tonic creates an immediate, almost physical friction as soon as the two notes sound one after the other or together. Phrygian keeps the minor third that gives it its overall minor color, like the natural minor scale or Dorian, but that lowered second adds a dark, tense edge that many describe as exotic, since it departs sharply from the sounds most common in classical and popular Western music.

Which chord to play Phrygian over, the Andalusian cadence, and Phrygian dominant

Phrygian fits a plain minor or minor 7 chord, a chord that stacks the tonic, minor third, fifth and minor seventh: those are the same basic notes as Dorian or the natural minor scale, and it's the melody, by leaning on the characteristic minor second, that really sets Phrygian apart from the other two to the ear. Over a static minor vamp where you want a darker, more tense color than Dorian, Phrygian's minor second becomes the anchor point to favor.

The ground where Phrygian has settled most firmly is flamenco, and more specifically the Andalusian cadence, which takes its name from the Andalusia region in southern Spain. That cadence strings together four chords that descend step by step from the mode's fourth degree down to its tonic (a progression often written iv-III-II-i), leaning on the characteristic minor second at every step of the descent. Its origin traces back to traditional Andalusian music and carries traces of the Moorish and Near Eastern influences that marked the region during the Al-Andalus period; today it forms the harmonic foundation of several flamenco palos, including soleares and bulerías. One detail worth knowing: the final resolving chord, built on the mode's tonic, is very often played major rather than minor in this tradition, which gives rise to a variant sometimes called Phrygian major or the flamenco mode, and further sharpens the sense of resolution at the end of the descent.

A cousin scale derives from that practice, Phrygian dominant, which is worth knowing by name without needing a whole guide of its own: it's the fifth mode of the harmonic minor scale, and it resembles Phrygian in every respect but one, its third, major instead of minor. That major third, combined with Phrygian's retained minor second, gives an even more pronounced color, common in flamenco as much as in Middle Eastern music, and particularly well suited to a dominant chord resolving to a minor chord.

Outside flamenco, Phrygian's minor second has found an equally natural home in metal, where its dark, aggressive color suits the heaviest riffs perfectly: bands like Black Sabbath and Metallica have explored it across parts of their catalogs, especially in faster, more biting styles like thrash.

Aeolian: the natural minor scale itself, a mode rarely called by that name

Aeolian starts on the sixth degree of the major scale. Its interval formula, a whole step, a half step, a whole step, a whole step, a half step, a whole step, a whole step, is nothing other than that of the natural minor scale, already covered in depth in the guide on major and minor scales. This isn't a coincidence or a resemblance: Aeolian and the natural minor scale are exactly the same scale, with two different names depending on the angle you're looking at it from.

That's precisely why the Aeolian mode is rarely mentioned in everyday practice. When a musician learns the minor scale, whether to build a minor chord, transpose a song or improvise a solo, they learn it directly as the natural minor scale, the reference scale for anything minor, without going through modal vocabulary at all. The term Aeolian only comes up in practice in one specific context: when comparing it to the other modes that share its minor color, to pin down exactly how each one departs from it.

That name is also more recent than most people assume in the history of Western theory. The system of modes used in medieval liturgical chant originally counted only eight, built around Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian and Mixolydian. Aeolian was only added, along with Ionian, in 1547, by the Swiss theorist Henricus Glareanus in his treatise Dodecachordon, which extended the system to twelve modes to better account for a musical practice already sliding toward what would become the major-minor tonal system. Once that tonal system settled in over the following centuries, the natural minor scale no longer needed the name Aeolian to exist: it became one of the two reference scales of all Western tonal theory, taught under that simpler name long before modal vocabulary became a common tool again in the twentieth century, particularly in jazz.

It's that reference role that makes Aeolian indispensable to this guide, even without a separate technical section devoted to a chord or vamp of its own: Dorian, Phrygian and Locrian are all three defined by how they depart from it, never the other way around. It serves as the zero point, the minor scale from which shifting one note gives Dorian, shifting a different one gives Phrygian, and shifting two notes together gives Locrian, as the next section details.

The four minor modes and the notes that set each one apart

Four of the seven modes of the major scale share a minor third and so sound, at first hearing, in the same family as the natural minor scale: Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian itself and Locrian. Comparing them directly against each other, rather than each one separately against the major scale, pins down precisely what sets each color apart.

Dorian and Phrygian each depart from Aeolian by just one note. Dorian raises the sixth by a half step, making it major instead of minor, which gives it the bright minor color covered in the previous guide. Phrygian lowers the second by a half step, making it minor instead of major, which gives it, by contrast, the dark, tense color covered above. The two modes sit almost symmetrically on either side of Aeolian: one brightens it from the top of the scale, the other darkens it from the bottom.

Locrian, by contrast, doesn't depart from Aeolian by one note but by two: its second, lowered exactly like Phrygian's, and its fifth, lowered by a further half step to become diminished. In other words, Locrian can be understood as a Phrygian stripped of the stability of its perfect fifth as well: it stacks the tension of the minor second with the instability of a diminished fifth, where Phrygian carries only the first. That stacking is what explains why Locrian sounds noticeably more unstable than the three other minor modes, and why its real-world use, covered further on, stays so different from theirs.

Locrian in depth: the diminished fifth and an unstable tonic chord

The Locrian mode starts on the seventh degree of the major scale. Its interval formula, a half step, a whole step, a whole step, a half step, a whole step, a whole step, a whole step, stacks the two alterations described above on top of Aeolian: the minor second and the diminished fifth.

B Locrian, for example, uses exactly the same notes as C major starting from B, namely B, C, D, E, F, G, A. In B natural minor, the relative scale of D major, the second would be a C sharp instead of a C natural, and the fifth an F sharp instead of an F natural: two different notes, exactly the two alterations that define Locrian relative to Aeolian.

That diminished fifth, an exact tritone above the tonic, is Locrian's single most decisive characteristic note, because it reaches straight into the mode's tonic chord. A chord built on the scale's first three usable notes, tonic, third and fifth, normally forms a stable chord, major or minor depending on the mode, in the other six modes; in Locrian, that same construction yields a diminished chord, because its fifth is reduced by a half step from a perfect fifth, while its third stays minor just as in the Aeolian it derives from. Add the mode's minor seventh, and that diminished chord becomes exactly what theory calls a half-diminished chord, written m7♭5: a minor 7 chord with a lowered fifth, to be distinguished from a fully diminished chord, which would also lower the seventh.

Locrian is the only one of the seven modes whose tonic chord is neither a stable major nor a stable minor chord, but a half-diminished chord, unstable by nature. That's a fundamental difference from the other six modes, Dorian and Phrygian included, whose tonic always carries a perfectly consonant minor or major chord, capable of serving as a point of rest for the ear.

Why Locrian (almost) never serves as the basis for a static vamp, and where you actually encounter it

Dorian, Mixolydian, Lydian and Phrygian all work on the same principle: a chord or vamp that stays still long enough for the mode's color to become the actual subject of the improvisation, exactly as the previous guide details for modal harmony. That principle breaks down with Locrian, precisely because its half-diminished tonic chord never provides the sense of rest that the major or minor chords of the other six modes do. Holding a Locrian vamp for several bars would mean never letting the ear settle anywhere: the tension never releases at any point, which makes the exercise feel closer to a theoretical exercise than a convincing musical experience. That's why Locrian remains, by a wide margin, the least used of the seven modes of the major scale.

Its real-world use lies elsewhere: in jazz, over a passing half-diminished chord, particularly on the second degree of a minor key, right before a minor ii-V-i cadence that closes the phrase back onto the tonic. The chord usually lasts only a bar or two before giving way to the next one: Locrian serves there as a passing color, not a destination.

Outside that fairly specific jazz context, Locrian stays rare. It has no style or entire repertoire built around its color the way Dorian does in funk, Mixolydian in blues, or Phrygian in flamenco: its underlying instability is exactly what keeps it from becoming a song's main color. Knowing it is still worthwhile, if only to understand why modal theory groups seven modes into the same family even though six of them lend themselves to static modal improvisation while the seventh, structurally, doesn't.

Finding the notes of the four modes from a major scale you already know

The previous guide covers the general method for finding a mode's notes without memorizing a new list: identify the parent major scale, then shift only the tonic to the right degree. This section applies that same shortcut to the four modes covered here, without repeating the general explanation already laid out.

For Lydian, a Lydian tonic always sits on the fourth degree of its parent major scale, in other words a perfect fourth above that parent scale. To play in F Lydian, just step down a perfect fourth to C, build C major, then replay those same notes starting back from F as the anchor point.

For Phrygian, a Phrygian tonic always sits on the third degree of its parent major scale, in other words a major third above that parent scale. To play in E Phrygian, just step down a major third to C, build C major, then replay those same notes starting back from E.

For Locrian, a Locrian tonic always sits on the seventh degree of its parent major scale, in other words a mere half step above that parent scale. To play in B Locrian, just step up a half step to C, build C major, then replay those same notes starting back from B.

As for Aeolian, that shortcut is nothing other than the relative major scale, already explained in detail in the guide on major and minor scales: stepping up a minor third from the Aeolian tonic gives you directly the tonic of its relative major scale. All four calculations therefore boil down to a single mental move, once major key signatures are well internalized: spot the parent scale, then replay the same notes while shifting only the starting point.

Common pitfalls to avoid

Why — Lydian shares six notes out of seven with the classic major scale; only the fourth changes. To an untrained ear, the augmented fourth can sound like a wrong note if you're not expecting it, which pushes you to reflexively "correct" it back to the perfect fourth, erasing the exact color you were after.

Do this instead : Over a maj7#11 vamp or an explicitly Lydian chord, treat the augmented fourth as a full-fledged anchor point rather than a passing note to avoid.

MistakeTreating Phrygian as automatically identical to Phrygian dominant

Why — Both share the characteristic minor second and the same flamenco kinship, but pure Phrygian keeps a minor third while Phrygian dominant, the fifth mode of the harmonic minor scale, replaces it with a major third. Mixing the two up makes the third clash with whatever chord is actually being played.

Do this instead : Check the third of the accompanying chord before choosing: a minor third calls for pure Phrygian, a major third calls for Phrygian dominant.
