Left-hand accompaniment patterns at the piano
What the left hand actually does: rhythm and order, not the notes themselves
On the piano, unlike an instrument played with a single melodic hand, accompaniment is split between two fully independent hands. The right hand most often carries the melody, or a full chord whose notes and vertical position must be chosen; the left hand carries the pulse and the harmonic foundation, and its job is to decide when each element sounds and in what order, not which notes make up the chord itself.
That distinction sets this guide clearly apart from another, complementary one on the Music Hub: "Chord inversions at the piano" answers the question of which notes to play and in what vertical order, root in the bass or inverted. This guide answers a different question, that of when and in what rhythm: at what moment does the bass sound, at what moment does the chord join it, and in what repeating figure. The two questions overlap without competing: any of the patterns described below can be played with whatever inversion is chosen for its chord part.
This guide is, in a sense, the pianistic mirror of "Right-hand guitar patterns," which sets out how a guitarist's right hand builds a rhythm by subtraction across a grid of beats. But the mechanics differ at a deeper level: a guitar strum strikes every note of a chord together, in the same gesture. The piano's left hand, by contrast, can spread the notes of a single chord out in time, playing the bass first and the rest afterwards, a possibility a strummed guitar chord simply does not offer. That structural difference is exactly why the piano developed a whole vocabulary of patterns, the oom-pah, the Alberti bass, the waltz bass, with no direct guitar equivalent.
Six patterns cover most of that vocabulary, from the single bass note to the jazz shell voicing, and two cross-cutting concerns, the pedal and voice spacing, govern how well each of them works regardless of style.
The single bass note: the root repeated
The simplest pattern there is asks the left hand for just one note, the root of the chord, repeated as is, sometimes doubled at the octave below to give the sound more body. Nothing else: no fifth, no chord, no melodic movement, just that one note anchoring the harmony while everything else, melody and colour, is played by the right hand.
That bareness makes it the classic starting point of piano teaching: it frees a beginner's attention, letting them focus entirely on the right hand without yet having to coordinate a second rhythmic movement. But it is not just a teaching exercise: in a stripped-down ballad, a hymn, or any accompaniment where the right hand already plays a dense chord or carries a richly harmonised melody, adding a bass-chord pattern or a full arpeggio in the left hand would become redundant, even muddy, a problem covered in detail later in this guide.
Rhythmically, the single bass note comes in several forms: one whole note held by the pedal across the whole bar, repeated quarter notes on every beat for a more driving pulse, heartbeat-style in a ballad, or a single strike on the first beat of every bar or every chord change, the most minimal and spacious version of all.
Every pattern that follows is, in a sense, only a successive elaboration of this base: the root-fifth bass adds a second note, the oom-pah pattern adds a whole chord, the Alberti bass breaks the order wide open. Understanding the single bass note thoroughly, before adding anything at all, remains the best starting point for everything else.
The root-fifth bass: root and fifth in alternation
The root-fifth bass adds a single note to the single bass note: the fifth of the chord, played in alternation with the root, typically the root on the strong beats and the fifth on the weak beats, or simply alternating on every beat. The two notes never sound together: it is a line, one note at a time, never a chord.
Choosing the fifth, and not some other note, is not arbitrary. The fifth is the interval closest to the root in the natural harmonic series, the one that reinforces a resonance already present in the low note rather than adding a new colour; unlike the third, it does not decide between major and minor. A root-fifth bass therefore leaves the right hand, alone, responsible for fixing the mode of the chord, a practical choice in folk, gospel, or any music where the left-hand accompaniment is meant to stay deliberately neutral.
This figure is, in fact, nothing exclusively pianistic: it is exactly the same principle as a guitar or electric bass line in root-fifth, simply transposed onto the ten fingers of a keyboard. It is often the second pattern taught right after the single bass note, because it only requires learning one extra move, almost always a perfect fifth up or, just as often, a fourth down to stay in a comfortable hand position.
One variant drops the fifth below the root instead of placing it above, which changes the melodic contour of the bass line without changing its function; some players enrich the figure further by inserting the root's octave between the two notes, root-octave-fifth, already foreshadowing the note-by-note logic that the Alberti bass takes further, later in this guide.
The bass-chord pattern, or oom-pah: bass note and chord in alternation
The oom-pah pattern, also called the bass-chord bass, adds a second element far denser than a simple fifth: a full chord, struck with all its notes at once, in alternation with an isolated bass note. In four-beat time, the most common formula puts the bass, usually the root, sometimes doubled at the octave or even the tenth, on beats 1 and 3, and the full chord on beats 2 and 4. The pattern's nickname, oom-pah, imitates that alternation directly: the low, brief 'oom' of the bass note, followed by the fuller 'pah' of the chord.
This pattern carries a double history, born in two traditions that had nothing in common. The first comes from the accordion and the Parisian bal-musette, a style of popular dance and music that appeared in the 1880s, at first dominated by the Auvergnat cabrette bagpipe before the accordion gradually took over. For its left hand, the accordion uses a system of preset buttons called the Stradella bass system, where a single press produces either an isolated bass note or an already-formed complete chord: the bass-chord pattern is therefore not just a playing habit among musette accordionists, it is partly built into the very mechanics of the instrument, which makes the gesture almost automatic.
The second comes from stride piano, born in Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s. James P. Johnson, regarded as the father of the style alongside Willie "The Lion" Smith, Fats Waller and Luckey Roberts, gave it a left hand that alternates a bass note, an octave or sometimes a tenth, on beats 1 and 3, with a chord on beats 2 and 4, exactly the same oom-pah alternation, this time developed out of the simpler two-beat rhythm of the ragtime that preceded it. Johnson himself treated that regularity as something to play with: some of his recordings deliberately reverse the pattern into pah-oom, or complicate it into oom-oom-pah, proof that the basic scheme was treated as a starting point to vary from the moment it appeared, never as a fixed formula.
That two traditions this far apart, a bellows and buttons on one side, ten fingers on a keyboard on the other, converged independently on the same rhythmic pattern is no coincidence: later in this guide, particularly the section on voice spacing, shows that the choice answers a very real acoustic constraint, the same one regardless of which instrument runs into it.
Technically, the left hand's leap between the low note and the chord above it, then back again, is a genuine coordination challenge: it is that movement, not the notes themselves, that makes the oom-pah pattern clumsy the first few times and fluid once the gesture becomes automatic.
The three-beat waltz bass: single bass on beat one, chord on the next two
In three-beat time, the same logic as the oom-pah pattern adapts into a different shape: an isolated bass note, often just the root with no octave, on beat 1 alone, followed by a full chord repeated identically on beats 2 and 3, a figure pianists sum up with the onomatopoeia 'boom-chick-chick.'
This is not a conceptually different pattern from the oom-pah: it is the same idea, isolating the bass and then following it with the harmony, applied to a bar with one fewer beat, where the chord, instead of appearing just once, repeats twice in a row.
That repetition imposes a precise dynamic requirement: playing beats 2 and 3 at the same volume as beat 1 flattens the bar into three equal strikes and strips it of its waltz character, a clear 'one' followed by two noticeably lighter beats. Noticeably softening the volume of the two chords that follow the bass, while keeping their rhythmic placement exact, remains the technical key to the pattern. The left hand must also make a faster leap than in the four-beat oom-pah: only a single beat of bass before it already has to be repositioned for the chord, then just as fast a return to the start of the next bar.
The three-beat meter itself descends from the Ländler, a popular dance from Austria and Bavaria in the late eighteenth century, before it refined into the salon waltz and then took off in Vienna in the early nineteenth century. This structure, with a single clear accent on the first beat, inherited directly from that history, remains the rhythmic backbone of every waltz played at the piano today.
The broken arpeggio, or Alberti bass: the notes one by one
Rather than setting an isolated bass note against a struck chord, the broken arpeggio spells out every note of the chord one by one, in a fixed order that repeats bar after bar, typically low-high-middle-high: the root first, then the highest note, then the middle note, then the highest again. This particular figure has a name, the Alberti bass.
The name comes from Domenico Alberti, a Venetian singer, harpsichordist and composer born around 1710 and who died in 1740 or 1746 depending on the source, trained under the composer Antonio Lotti. Alberti did not invent the device, but he used it so abundantly in his keyboard sonatas that it eventually took his name. The pattern enjoyed enormous success throughout the classical era, roughly between 1750 and 1820, and turns up prominently in Mozart, whose opening to the Piano Sonata K. 545 remains the example most often cited in teaching.
That success is explained by a very concrete limitation of the keyboard instruments of the time, the harpsichord and then the nascent fortepiano: neither can do what a sustained voice or a bowed string can do, hold a note at will. Their sound decays the moment the key is released. The continuous eighth-note or sixteenth-note motion of the Alberti bass creates the illusion of a sustained chord through rhythmic activity alone, filling a silence a struck chord would otherwise have left open.
Not to be confused with a plain arpeggio: an ordinary arpeggio runs through the notes of a chord in a single direction, rising or falling. The Alberti bass, by contrast, zigzags: the lowest note returns with every group, not just at the start of the bar, which keeps a bass pulse clearly audible even though each individual note belongs to melodic movement rather than to a struck chord.
The device is nothing strictly classical: it still turns up today across a good part of piano accompaniment in song and pop balladry, a broken arpeggio replacing the oom-pah pattern for the same reason it did in the eighteenth century, filling space and giving movement under a melody without ever competing harmonically with it, since it is exactly the same notes as a struck chord, only spread out over time.
Syncopated chords: anticipating or delaying to create a groove
Rather than letting the left hand's chord land squarely on a beat, the way the oom-pah or the waltz bass systematically do, a syncopated accompaniment deliberately displaces it: either anticipating it, playing it an eighth or sixteenth note before the beat it "belongs" to, often tied across that beat, or delaying it, playing it just after.
The two displacements do not produce the same effect. Anticipation pushes the music forward, a feeling that the piece is getting ahead of itself, a common reflex in funk, gospel, or Latin-inflected pop piano. Delay produces the opposite feeling, one of relaxation, deliberately playing behind the beat, typical of blues and soul piano. Neither works without a clearly felt sense of pulse in the listener's ear: syncopation is a conscious departure from a grid, not the absence of one.
This choice contrasts sharply with the patterns described above: the oom-pah, the waltz bass or the root-fifth bass place every event exactly on the beat, and that is precisely the point, a predictability that lets the right hand or a voice sing freely above it without having to realign. A syncopated accompaniment reverses that relationship: the left hand itself becomes an active rhythmic voice, deliberately rubbing against the beat rather than simply marking it, which is why the technique is far more associated with jazz, funk or gospel than with the steady oom-pah of a folk ballad.
Without a solid internal count, the "one-and-two-and" kind detailed in the guide "Right-hand guitar patterns" for a different context but an identical principle, a displaced chord never sounds like a choice: it sounds like a placement mistake. Syncopation only becomes a usable tool once the regular, on-the-beat version of the same pattern is already completely secure.
Overview: which pattern for which style
These six patterns never mutually exclude one another within the same piece. A typical piano accompaniment often changes figure from one section to the next: a spacious single bass note under a quiet verse, a denser oom-pah under a chorus building in energy, a broken arpeggio to soften a bridge, an occasional syncopated chord to mark a lift. The table below summarises the rhythmic structure and typical use of each.

None of these six choices is more "advanced" or more "correct" than another in any absolute sense: it is a decision of style and character, not a rule to follow to the letter. The same chord chart can be accompanied with any of these figures, and training the ear to guess which one a piece calls for, even before the hands touch the keyboard, is as much a part of the craft as finger technique itself.
The sustain pedal: from legato to the overlap of two chords
The sustain pedal, also called the damper pedal or resonance pedal, operated with the right foot, does more than just prolong the notes held by the fingers: it lifts every damper in the piano at once, on every string of the instrument, not just the strings of the notes actually being played. All the strings then become free to resonate in sympathy, an effect fundamentally different from simply holding a key down with a finger, which only sets the string of that single note vibrating.
The mechanism did not yet exist in Bartolomeo Cristofori's day: his very first pianos, around 1700-1720, had neither a pedal nor a lever to lift every damper at once, and the sound decayed with no general sustain device at all. It was the German instrument maker Gottfried Silbermann who introduced, after Cristofori's death, a hand-operated stop for that same effect; Johann Andreas Stein then replaced it with a knee lever in the 1770s; makers active in London such as the Dutch-born Americus Backers then moved that mechanism to a foot pedal as early as 1772, and John Broadwood filed a patent for it in 1783; the fitting gradually became standard on pianos over the following decades.
Used well, the sustain pedal solves a problem the fingers alone cannot: unlike a voice or a bowed string instrument, the piano cannot connect two distant notes in a true legato just by holding the keys down, since a note's sound decays the moment the finger releases it. The technique taught first in any serious piano pedagogy, legato pedalling or delayed pedalling, consists of pressing the pedal an instant after playing the note or chord, never before or at the same time, then releasing it at the exact moment the next sound is struck, before pressing it straight back down. Foot and hands move toward each other, in a sense, at every change, a reflex that requires its own dedicated practice, isolated from every other difficulty.
The opposite problem, the harmonic blur mentioned in this guide's opening answer, arises precisely when the pedal stays down without a break from one chord to the next. The resonance of the old chord, whose strings remain free to vibrate since their dampers are lifted, keeps sounding underneath the new chord struck over it. The harmonics of the two different chords overlap instead of following one another cleanly, and the ear loses any clear boundary between a 'before' and an 'after': it hears nothing but a mass of indistinct pitches.
This risk hits particularly hard on the patterns described earlier in this guide that already demand a fast move from the left hand, the oom-pah pattern leaping from a low bass note to a higher chord, or the Alberti bass with its continuous note-by-note motion: a badly changed pedal across these leaps wipes out exactly the rhythmic clarity the pattern was trying to build, turning a crisp oom-pah into a sonic blur. The rule always stays the same: change the pedal precisely at the moment the harmony changes, never before, treating it as a rhythmic gesture synchronised with the hands rather than a background effect set once and forgotten.
Voice spacing in the low register: why a close chord sounds muddy below middle C
Here is the phenomenon, something any pianist can observe in a few seconds at the keyboard: the same major triad, in close position, all its notes gathered within a fourth or a fifth, sounds clean and readable played in the middle of the keyboard. The same chord, exactly the same notes, exactly the same position, brought down below middle C, starts to sound thick, indistinct, muddy as pianists say, even though no note has changed, only the register has moved.
This phenomenon has a precise acoustic explanation, documented by psychoacoustic research on the ear's critical bands, formalised in particular by the German physicist Eberhard Zwicker in the early 1960s. The ear resolves frequencies into windows called critical bands, inside which it tends to blend several sounds into a single mass rather than perceive them as distinct. In low frequencies, below about 500 Hz, this critical band stays roughly 100 Hz wide, wherever exactly it is centred: it does not narrow in proportion to pitch, unlike musical intervals themselves.
The numbers make the phenomenon concrete. A minor third above middle C, say from C4 (about 261.6 Hz) to E♭4, is a gap of only about 49 Hz. The same minor third played an octave lower, from C3 (about 130.8 Hz) to E♭3, is a gap of only about 25 Hz. Two octaves below middle C, from C2 to E♭2, the gap barely reaches 12 Hz. The ear's critical band, meanwhile, stays roughly 100 Hz wide across that whole range. The same musical interval, unchanged in name and function, therefore ends up fitting entirely inside a single critical band as it is transposed downward: past that threshold, the ear no longer separates the two pitches, it hears roughness, a blur, rather than two clearly distinct notes.
Orchestration and arranging have long taught a practical rule of thumb that lines up exactly with what this calculation predicts, known as the low interval limit. A third, major or minor, stops reading cleanly once voiced around an octave below middle C and lower; the rule usually taught holds that below the middle line of the bass clef, around D3, any sustained harmony should stay consonant and wide, a fifth, an octave, a tenth, rather than tightened into a third, a seventh or a ninth.

This benchmark directly explains why none of the patterns described above ever stacks a full chord in close position right at the bottom of the keyboard and lets it ring that way. The oom-pah and the waltz bass isolate a single low bass note and move the whole chord up an octave or more, a zone where the same intervals fall back into separate critical bands and read cleanly. The root-fifth bass only ever places a wide interval, the fifth, way down low, never a third, precisely because a fifth survives the low register far better than a third does. Even the Alberti bass, which does eventually sound the third of the chord, never sounds it at the same time as the bass: one note at a time, never stacked. None of the musicians who developed these patterns needed to know a single number in Hertz: they arrived, by ear, over generations, at exactly the solution acoustics predicts.
When a full, low chord is nonetheless needed, a final closing chord firmly anchored, say, the solution is not to give up the low register but to open the chord out rather than pile it up: move the third and the other inner voices up an octave relative to the bass, so that a third becomes a tenth, a fifth stays a fifth or becomes a twelfth. It is always the same notes, always the same chord, simply spaced so that every interval falls back inside a window the ear can resolve. This spacing choice combines with, but stays distinct from, the choice of inversion, which note ends up at the very bottom: the guide "Chord inversions at the piano" details how that second choice is made; this section deals only with the gap between the notes once that first choice has been settled.
3-7 shell voicings: the pared-down left hand of jazz comping
In jazz comping, a very common reduction of the left-hand chord keeps only two of its notes, the third and the seventh, what is called a 3-7 shell voicing, or a guide-tone shell. The root disappears, left to the bass player who already covers it elsewhere in the ensemble; the fifth disappears too, for the same reason set out in the guide "Chord inversions at the piano": it reinforces a resonance already present in the root and adds little colour of its own to the chord, which makes it the first note sacrificed when only two fingers are available.
Keeping precisely these two notes, and not some other two, is not arbitrary. The third alone already decides between major and minor; the seventh alone decides between a major 7, dominant 7 or minor 7 type chord. Together, these two guide tones, as they are called, are enough for a listener to identify a chord's complete colour unambiguously, even without ever hearing its root. This economy also opens the door to harmonic substitutions such as the tritone substitution: a dominant seventh chord and the one built an augmented fourth away share exactly the same third-seventh pair, simply inverted, which lets the same shell serve, untouched, for more than one possible chord.
This voicing choice connects directly to this guide's rhythmic angle, more than to the notes themselves: a shell voicing does not just lighten the chord, it changes how the left hand plays it in time. Freed from three or four notes, the left hand generally plays the shell in short, detached touches rather than as a held oom-pah-style chord, often placed off the strong beat, in direct echo of the section on syncopated chords above: jazz comping frequently anticipates or delays these two-note touches to converse with the drums and bass, rather than marking every beat the way a ballad's oom-pah would. That is what gives jazz comping a rhythmic character so different from a song accompaniment, even though both, on paper, are never more than "a chord played by the left hand."

The broader family of rootless voicings, which strip out the root altogether and add one or two colour notes, a ninth or a thirteenth, on top of this same third-seventh skeleton, is mainly associated with the piano trios of the second half of the 1950s, Bill Evans foremost among them alongside pianists such as Wynton Kelly, Red Garland and Ahmad Jamal, in a context where the bass player already covers the root and the pianist no longer needs to double it. The exact way these four-note voicings, the type A and type B shapes, are built note by note is the subject of the guide "Chord inversions at the piano," which covers them in depth; the 3-7 shell described here differs by remaining the two-note skeleton these richer voicings are built on, and stays, on its own, the simplest starting point most commonly taught to a pianist beginning jazz comping.
Practising all this at the keyboard: a progression
The order in which these patterns are practised matters as much as knowing each one individually. Starting with the single bass note and the root-fifth bass at a slow tempo lets a stable left hand take root with no added complexity; only once that foundation is automatic is it worth introducing the oom-pah and waltz bass, which demand a real leap of register in time. The Alberti bass comes next, because its continuous note-by-note motion needs its own coordination, distinct from the oom-pah's simple leap. Syncopation should arrive only last, and only once the regular, on-the-beat version of a pattern is already completely secure: deliberately displacing something that is not yet stable never produces a groove, only confusion.
The pedal deserves separate practice, isolated from any other difficulty: hold a single chord and repeat, with a metronome, the gesture of releasing then pressing the pedal back down without moving the hands, listening precisely for the moment the resonance actually cuts off rather than trailing away. Only once that movement is reliable on its own is it worth layering it onto a real chord change.
The ear can be trained just as directly for the question of spacing: play the same chord in close position, in the same key, at every octave on the keyboard, from the highest down to the lowest, simply listening for the exact moment it stops sounding like three distinct notes and turns into a blurry mass. Replaying the same descent while opening the chord out as you go down lets you hear how many extra registers of clarity that single spacing decision buys. It is the same judgment the low interval limit benchmark formalises, but acquired by ear rather than memorised as an abstract rule.
None of these six patterns is, in any absolute sense, more advanced or more legitimate than another: a beginner's single bass note and a jazz pianist's syncopated shell voicing solve exactly the same problem, giving the right hand a rhythmic and harmonic ground to lean on, just at very different degrees of density. The real skill this guide describes is choosing, consciously, whichever one a given musical moment calls for.
Common pitfalls to avoid

Do this instead : Change the pedal, release then press back down, at the precise instant of every chord change, never before it or long after; practise that motion in isolation, without the hands, before combining it with actual playing.

What's the difference between the root-fifth bass and the oom-pah pattern (bass-chord)?
The root-fifth bass alternates two isolated notes, the root then the fifth, never more than one note at a time. The oom-pah pattern alternates an isolated bass note and a full chord struck above it, the 'oom-pah' figure found equally in the musette waltz and in Harlem stride piano. Both figures share the same alternating logic, but not the same density of notes on the second beat.
Where does the name 'Alberti bass' come from?
From the Venetian composer Domenico Alberti, roughly 1710 to 1740 or 1746 depending on the source, a singer and harpsichordist who used it abundantly in his keyboard sonatas without being its exact inventor. The device, a rapid repetition of a chord's notes in a fixed low-high-middle-high order, enjoyed immense success throughout the classical era, notably in Mozart, because it gave the illusion of a sustained chord on an instrument that could not actually hold a sound.
Why does the sustain pedal sometimes turn a clear accompaniment into a harmonic blur?
Because it lifts every damper in the piano at once, not just those of the notes being played: every string stays free to resonate.
