Chord inversions at the piano
The three states of a chord: root position, first inversion, second inversion
A triad, the simplest chord there is, stacks three notes in thirds: a root, a third above it, a fifth above that again. Inverting that chord touches none of those three notes, and does not touch its name either: it changes only which of the three ends up lowest, in the bass, underneath the other two.
When the root occupies that lowest place, the chord is in root position: for a C major chord, that gives C in the bass, then E, then G above. It is the most stable position to the ear, the one a beginner learns first, and the one a final cadence almost always closes on.
In first inversion, it is the third of the chord that slides down to the bass: for C major, that gives E in the bass, then G, then C above. The chord remains exactly the same C major chord, only its bass has changed, from C to E.
In second inversion, the fifth goes down to the bass: G at the bottom, then C, then E above. Still the same C major chord, this time with G as the lowest note.

The principle does not stop at triads. A four-note chord, a seventh chord for instance, allows a third inversion, the one where the seventh itself ends up in the bass; the Music Hub guide "Seventh chords: dominant, major 7, minor 7" sets out how those four-note chords are built if the subject is not familiar yet. What matters is this: a chord of n notes always offers n possible states, one root position and n minus one inversions, without the name of the chord or the notes it contains ever changing, only their vertical order.
Spotting an inversion by ear and on the page: everything happens in the bass
Spotting an inversion means getting into one precise habit: identify the three notes of the chord first, without worrying about their order, then look only at which of the three is being played lowest, in the bass. At the piano, that lowest note is almost always the first note the left hand puts down, the one sounding underneath everything else.
The classic trap is confusing the lowest note on the page with the root of the chord: they are two different things, and they coincide only in root position. A chord whose three notes are C, E and G, whatever order they happen to appear in on the staff, is a C major chord; it is only the presence of E or G in the bass, rather than C, that signals an inversion.
By ear the difference is just as clear, once you know what to listen for. A chord in root position sounds settled, anchored, almost conclusive, precisely because the note that gives the chord its name is also the one heard underneath everything else. An inverted chord sounds more suspended, less definitively arrived, because the ear picks up a slight tension between the bass and the rest of the harmony; that is exactly why a final cadence, the very last chord of a piece, is almost always played in root position and never inverted, to give that clean sense of a full stop.
On a classical score written out note for note, you simply look at the lowest note actually drawn on the left-hand staff. On a modern chord chart, the presence or absence of a slash after the chord symbol settles the question outright, without reading a single note on a staff: the subject of the next section.
The slash chord: what C/E really encodes, and where the slash came from
Modern chord symbols write an inversion in the most direct way imaginable: the name of the chord, then a slash, then the note that has to be in the bass. C/E therefore means a C major chord, C-E-G, played with E at the bottom: precisely the first inversion described above. Most players read that symbol without ever stopping to think about it, which is exactly the point of the shorthand: it never renames the chord and never spells out its structure, it assumes the player already knows a C major chord and adds one single extra piece of information, where the bass goes.
Writing an inversion on one line like this is not an old habit: it belongs to the chord charts and lead sheets of the twentieth century, popularised by popular music and by jazz, with no one theorist claiming to have invented it on a given date. Before that convention, classical music solved the same problem another way, with figured bass, also known as basso continuo: a bass line written out in notes, under which a continuo player at the harpsichord or the organ read figures placed beneath each note to work out which chord to build above it, and in which inversion. The practice took hold in Italy from the very beginning of the seventeenth century, carried in particular by the newborn art of opera around Claudio Monteverdi, whose L'Orfeo of 1607 already leans heavily on it; it remained the norm until the end of the eighteenth century, when fully written-out notation replaced it.
Classical figures named each inversion with a precise numerical shorthand: a first inversion was written with the figure 6 alone, in fact an abbreviation of 6/3; a second inversion was written 6/4. Both shortcuts still turn up today in any classical harmony textbook, standing for exactly the same two inversions described above, a simple difference of vocabulary between two eras.
One thing not to take for granted: not every slash symbol describes an inversion. When the note after the slash already belongs to the chord, as the E of C/E does, it is an inversion in the strict sense. But a composer can just as easily write a bass note foreign to the chord, an added bass that is not one of its notes, to create a particular colour or a pedal point; in that case the note after the slash is not an inversion at all, only a note placed underneath a chord that itself stays unchanged.
Why invert a chord: getting the bass to walk down by step
Without ever inverting a chord, a bass line can only play the roots of the chords one after the other, in whatever order they come. The trouble is that two neighbouring roots in a chart are rarely neighbours on the keyboard: the bass is then condemned to leap from one end of the instrument to the other at every chord change, a wide movement, ungainly, and tiring to play cleanly in time.
Inverting a chord, by contrast, hands you a conscious choice of which note goes in the bass, and therefore lets you build a bass line moving by step, from one neighbouring note to the next, rather than by leaps. Two chords that would sound far apart from each other in root position can end up a whole step or even a half step apart in the bass, once the right inversion has been picked for the second one.
The device has a precise name in the language of harmony, the descending bass line, one of the oldest and most heavily used gestures in all Western music. The baroque repertoire is full of it, in a particularly recognisable form known as the ground bass or lament bass, a bass that walks down by step or chromatically across a fourth, from the tonic to the dominant, while the chords above it change freely, one root on each new rung of the descent. Modern songwriting and pop borrow the same principle wholesale, in a shorter form, two or three chords at most, to slide the bass quietly down from a verse into a chorus without the listener ever consciously identifying the device, only its effect, a sense of gliding rather than of a break.

Voice leading, or economy of movement between two chords
Voice leading, called part writing in older British teaching, is the art of connecting two consecutive chords by moving as few fingers as possible and by moving each of them as little as possible. It is not an aesthetic refinement reserved for trained harmonists: it is directly what separates a chord progression that is clean and comfortable to play from one that forces the hand to reorganise itself completely at every change.
The simplest principle of voice leading is the common tone: when two consecutive chords share a note, the best solution is almost always to leave it exactly where it is, under the same finger, rather than play it again somewhere else. That is movement degree zero, no displacement at all for that voice. With no common tone, the next rule is to move each remaining voice by the smallest interval available, a step or, failing that, a small leap of a third, rather than a wide jump.
Classical four-part writing, the soprano-alto-tenor-bass texture taught as chorale style, codified this principle as early as the baroque with a rule that looks arbitrary at first: the ban on parallel fifths and octaves, two voices moving together while keeping the same interval between them. That ban goes back at least to the theorist Johannes de Garlandia, around 1300, and became firmly general around 1450: the reason has to do with the independence of the voices. A fifth and an octave are intervals so stable to the ear that two voices moving together in one of them end up sounding like a single doubled voice rather than two distinct lines, and since the fifth on its own does much to define the key of a passage, parallel fifths blur that perception on top of everything else.
Inversion is one of the most direct tools for applying this principle at the keyboard: by choosing the state, root position or inversion, in which to play the chord that is arriving, the pianist can put the bass and the other notes as close as possible to those of the previous chord, instead of letting them fall wherever root position would have dropped them by default.

That table compares the same chord change handled two ways: with both chords in root position, every voice leaps by the same wide interval; with a second inversion on the right-hand side, one voice does not move at all and the other two travel only a half step and a whole step, five times less cumulative movement for a harmonically identical result.
Left-hand and right-hand voicings: who plays what at the piano
Once the state of the chord has been chosen, root position or inversion, what remains is deciding how to share its notes out between the two hands: that is what is meant by a voicing, a term borrowed from arranging and from jazz for the exact vertical layout of a chord's notes, independent of its name. Two pianists can play "the same chord" and get radically different results depending on that choice.
The most widespread approach in classical and popular accompaniment gives the left hand the bass note, often doubled at the octave to seat the sound, while the right hand takes care of the rest of the chord in close voicing, the notes stacked as tightly together as they will go, rather than in an open voicing that spreads them across a wider span. A common beginner reflex is to play the complete chord with both hands at once, each hand repeating the same notes: the result sounds thick and tends to mask the melody rather than support it, unless that effect is genuinely wanted.
Classical piano teaching insists on this from the very first chord exercises: practise each inversion, blocked and then arpeggiated, in one key after another, precisely to train the left hand to stay at roughly the same place on the keyboard rather than jump from one position to another at every new chord. A left hand anchored in a single zone of the keyboard, leaning on the right inversion each time, plays faster, more accurately and with less fatigue than a hand that has to reposition itself constantly.
In jazz the split gets more involved: the left hand takes a voicing pared down to two or three characteristic notes, often just the third and the seventh, what players call a shell voicing, while the right hand adds colour notes above, a ninth or a thirteenth, or doubles the melody. That very particular split, and the reason the fifth is the first note to disappear from it, is the subject of the next section.
Leaving out the fifth: the note jazz pianists drop first
Of all the notes in a chord, the fifth is almost always the first to disappear from a voicing, and that choice comes straight out of acoustics. The fifth corresponds to the third partial of its root's harmonic series, one of the very first natural resonances the root produces on its own. Playing it as well therefore only reinforces a colour already present in the sound, without adding anything genuinely new; take away the third, by contrast, and the chord flips from major to minor, take away the seventh and its colour changes radically: the fifth is by a long way the most expendable of the four.
That economy becomes useful as soon as the chord takes on extensions, a ninth, an eleventh, a thirteenth, as is routine in jazz: with five fingers per hand and a chord that sometimes counts six notes on paper, something has to give, and the fifth is the first to yield its place so the colour notes can breathe.
That reasoning is exactly what gave rise, in the second half of the 1950s, to the voicings known as rootless, popularised in particular by Bill Evans, alongside pianists such as Wynton Kelly, Red Garland and Ahmad Jamal. The principle pushes the logic one notch further: the left hand gives up the root itself as well, leaving it to the bass player, and keeps only four notes, third, fifth, seventh and ninth, with the fifth itself often replaced by a thirteenth. That economy frees fingers for those richer harmonic shades without ever losing the identity of the chord, since the third and the seventh between them are enough to define it unambiguously.

Two shapes come up most often, the type A and the type B of the table above, and a pianist alternates between them from one chord to the next, for the same reason as the inversions further up: to keep the voices as close together as possible rather than make them jump.
A guided run-through, step by step
Here is how these reflexes fit together when a new chord arrives. First reflex, identify the notes of the chord that is coming and those of the chord just played, without worrying about their order: is there a common tone between the two? On a change as simple as C to F, the note C belongs to both chords at once, root of the first, fifth of the second.
Second reflex, choose the state of the new chord, root position or inversion, that keeps that common tone exactly where it already is. For F, that is the second inversion, F/C, which puts that shared C in the bass without a single finger having to move for that particular voice.
Third reflex, look at what is left to move: the other two notes, E to F and G to A, travel only a half step and a whole step respectively, next to nothing compared with the wide leap that root position on both sides would have imposed.
Fourth reflex, decide whether the chord needs thinning out: if the context leans jazz, or if the chord carries extensions, the fifth is the first candidate for omission, possibly followed by the root itself if a bass player is covering it anyway.
Fifth and last reflex, share out what is left between the two hands: the chosen bass in the left hand, doubled at the octave if the context is more classical or more pop, the rest of the chord in the right hand in close voicing, ready to take the melody or an extra colour note above it.
In practice this five-step run takes a fraction of a second once it has become automatic; what it does demand is being broken down consciously, chord after chord, for the whole period during which the hand is still learning to anticipate it rather than suffer it.
Getting better: how to actually work on your inversions
The only genuinely effective route to absorbing all of the above remains methodical repetition, exactly as classical piano teaching has always prescribed: play the three states of each chord, root position, first inversion, second inversion, blocked and then arpeggiated, note by note, in one key after another, starting with the simplest keys before gradually covering all twelve. The goal is not to memorise combinations of keys by heart, but to train the hand to recognise by instinct, under the fingers, the feel specific to each inversion.
A complementary exercise is to play the three states of the same chord one after the other, slowly, actively listening to the difference in stability between root position, clearly settled, and the two inversions, more suspended: that particular ear is not acquired by reading an explanation, only by doing it dozens of times in a row until the difference becomes obvious with no analytical effort at all.
One last exercise, closer to the real situation, is to take a chart of two or three very simple chords and rewrite its bass line yourself in slash notation, deliberately hunting for the inversion that moves the bass the smallest possible distance from one chord to the next: an active transcription exercise, far more instructive than reading through a worked example someone else has already solved.

Common pitfalls to avoid
MistakeConfusing an inversion with a change of chord: believing you have played a different chord when all you have changed is its bass.
Why — An inversion changes neither the notes of the chord nor its name, only the lowest note. A beginner who hears a different colour between C and C/E may wrongly conclude that the chord itself has changed, when the same three notes, C, E and G, are all still there.
Do this instead : Always name a chord from its three notes taken together, whatever their order, before looking at which one is in the bass; the name of the chord never changes across the three states.
MistakeReading a chord written C/E as a chord built on E, rather than a C chord with E in the bass.
Why — The letter after the slash is almost never a new root: it is only the note to play in the bass underneath the chord named before the slash, C in this case. Confusing the two produces an entirely wrong chord.
Do this instead : Always read the letter before the slash as the actual chord to play, and the one after it purely as the bass note to add, whether or not it belongs to the notes of that chord.
MistakeThinking about voice leading only for the bass line, and letting the right hand jump freely from one chord to the next.
Why — Economy of movement applies to every voice in a chord, not just to the bass: a right hand that systematically replants the same block shape far from where it just was loses exactly the same fluency the bass would have lost by leaping.
Do this instead : Apply the common-tone rule and the smallest-movement rule to every finger of both hands, not only to the lowest note.
MistakeFalling back on root position for every chord out of habit, without ever considering an inversion, even when the bass would gain from staying put or walking down by step.
Why — Root position is what you learn first, and it often stays the only automatic reflex long after inversions are theoretically understood; that reflex sends the hand leaping from one end of the keyboard to the other when an inversion would have spared it the trip.
Do this instead : Before playing the next chord, make a habit of asking whether it shares a note with the previous one, then choose the state, root position or inversion, that leaves that common tone where it already is.
MistakeSystematically removing the fifth from a voicing, including when that fifth is itself altered, as in a chord with a diminished or augmented fifth.
Why — Leaving out the fifth only holds for the ordinary perfect fifth, redundant with the root. As soon as the fifth is modified, diminished or augmented, it becomes the very note that defines the entire colour of the chord, and removing it erases what sets that chord apart from every other. The same reasoning applies to the fourth in a suspended chord: it does not replace the fifth, which stays where it is, but the third, and it is the fourth that then carries the whole tension of the chord.
Do this instead : Only drop a fifth when it is perfect and ordinary; always keep it when it is altered, just as you keep the fourth in a suspended chord, since it then carries the identity of the chord on its own.
