In a band, the bass holds a unique position: it is the only instrument that belongs to both the harmonic section and the rhythm section at once. The same note, left unresolved or placed on a strong beat with no clear link to what follows, sounds like a mistake instead. Three Ways to Play Depending on Style: Static, Walking, Syncopated
The style of a song radically changes what is expected of a bass line, even though the starting principle - root, fifth, passing notes - stays the same whatever the genre. Three broad families of approach cover most of the situations you will meet in front of a chart.
The first, the most direct, suits rock and a good deal of pop: a static line, built almost entirely on the root-fifth pattern, with few notes per bar and a clean attack on the strong beats. It is a settled, predictable approach that leaves all the room to the guitar and the vocal without ever distracting the ear.
The second, walking bass, is the signature of jazz and part of the blues: it plays a different note on every beat, four notes per bar in 4/4 (called walking in four), stringing together root, third, fifth, seventh and passing notes to create a continuous, steady motion that itself carries a good deal of the song's tempo.
The third, the syncopated line, dominates funk and reggae: rather than consistently landing on the beat, it anticipates certain attacks ahead of the beat, leaves gaps, and leans heavily on ghost notes - notes played with the fretting hand muting the string, with no definite pitch, which add a percussive texture without adding harmonic material. Reggae pushes this logic further still by deliberately leaving the first beat silent or very much in the background, shifting the rhythmic weight onto the off-beats.

Following the Chart's Harmonic Rhythm
