Tab or Chord Chart: What's the Difference?
What tab is: lines, numbers and how to read it
Tab rests on a very simple graphic principle: as many horizontal lines as the instrument has strings — six for a guitar, four for a standard bass or a ukulele, five for a banjo. Each line stands for one specific string, and by convention the top line is the highest-pitched string while the bottom line is the lowest-pitched one — the order mirrors what a musician sees looking down at the neck in playing position.
On each line, a number shows which fret to press on that string: a 0 means an open string, played with no finger down, a 3 means the third fret, and so on up to the highest frets on the neck. For example, a 3 placed on the bottom line of a guitar tab in standard tuning means "play the low E string, third fret" — nothing more, nothing less. At no point does that number say "G" or "C": it's up to the musician to know the instrument's tuning to work out the note actually produced.
Tab reads left to right like a line of text, each number encountered in that order corresponding to a note, or a set of notes, played at a given instant in the song. When several numbers line up at the same horizontal position, it means the strings involved sound together rather than one after another: a stacked column of numbers is played all at once, exactly like stacked notes on a classical staff.
Technique symbols: hammer-on, pull-off, bend, slide, vibrato, muted note
Beyond the bare number, tab almost always builds in symbols that specify how to connect two notes to each other, rather than playing each one separately with a fresh pick or finger attack. These symbols vary slightly in detail from one source to another, but a common core shows up in nearly all guitar and bass tab.

These symbols aren't mere decoration: they genuinely change the sound produced. A note obtained by a hammer-on or a pull-off sounds more connected, softer in its attack, than a note struck cleanly with the pick; a bend lets you reach an intermediate or target pitch without ever moving your finger to another fret; a muted note (x) doesn't even have a defined pitch — it works as a rhythmic, percussive accent. Reading tab without paying attention to these symbols amounts to playing every note "flat", losing the exact articulation the transcription was trying to capture in the first place.
Other symbols, less consistent from one source to another but just as common once you move past the simplest tab, round out this common core. Tapping, marked t, is a note obtained by striking the fret directly with a finger of the hand that usually holds the pick rather than with the fretting hand alone: the technique lets you chain notes very fast by splitting the work across both hands at once. A palm mute, marked P.M. followed by a dashed line running for the whole length of the passage concerned, means the edge of the picking hand rests near the bridge while playing, which partly dampens the strings' vibration and produces that muffled, percussive tone so recognizable in rhythm riffs. A natural harmonic, marked between two angle brackets or with the abbreviation Harm., is obtained by lightly touching a string without pressing it down to the fretboard, directly above a specific fret — most often the twelfth, seventh or fifth — which produces a clear, bell-like tone very different from a normally fretted note at the same spot. Finally, the marking let ring signals that a note or chord should keep ringing out without being muted even as other notes are played over it, and tremolo picking, often marked with repeated diagonal hatch marks above the number, calls for alternating upstrokes and downstrokes with the pick as fast as possible on a single held note.
A short history of tab: from Renaissance lute to the internet
Tab is not an invention of rock or of the internet: the principle goes back to European music of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, long before the electric guitar existed. The oldest surviving example of a tablature system in Europe is an organ manuscript, the Robertsbridge Codex, now dated to around 1360 after musicologists revised earlier datings; the notation then diversified across the 15th and 16th centuries for plucked string instruments such as the lute. German lute tablature is thought to go back to the 15th century, its invention traditionally credited to the blind organist Conrad Paumann; it noted each string and each fret through a system of letters and numbers specific to that tradition. Around the same time, a French lute tablature developed in parallel, using lowercase letters placed on lines representing the strings, with the letter a standing for the open string and the following letters standing for the successive frets — a principle that very directly foreshadows modern tab, where a number simply took the place of the letter.
The principle then crosses the centuries with its logic almost intact, even as it largely falls out of use once standard staff notation establishes itself as the common language of Western art music from the 17th century onward. It resurfaces in the 20th century, carried by an instrument very different from the Renaissance lute: the electric guitar. The first collections of rock and blues guitar tab appear around 1970, from small specialist publishers who set out to transcribe influential guitarists' playing note for note rather than settle for a simplified melody line. The format then spreads through specialist magazines over the course of the 1980s, each issue publishing several full transcriptions, combining standard notation and tab, of the songs of the moment.
The arrival of the internet then radically changes the scale of distribution. From the early 1990s, musicians trade plain-text tab on dedicated Usenet forums, notably the groups rec.music.makers.guitar.tablature and alt.guitar.tab, where anyone could post their own transcription of a song and requests for other tabs circulated freely. Since these posts would disappear after a few weeks for lack of server space, a student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, James Bender, starts archiving these posts around 1992 on his university's FTP server under the name On-Line Guitar Archive, better known by its acronym OLGA. Two years later, in 1994, a Tulane University student named Cathal Woods took over stewardship of the archive and moved it to its own domain name, olga.net; he would remain its keeper for about a dozen years, until the site's final closure. The site grew quickly, despite a dispute with a music publisher that got it pulled from the university's own servers as early as 1996: by 1997, OLGA already hosted around 22,000 files, mirrored across more than twenty sites worldwide, becoming the reference point for a whole generation of self-taught guitarists. OLGA then had to contend with repeated complaints from other publishers and rights-management bodies through the 2000s, until it received a cease-and-desist letter in 2006 from organizations representing music publishers, forcing it to pull all roughly 34,000 tabs then hosted on the site at once, and shutting it down for good. Around the same time, in 1998, a student from Kaliningrad named Eugeny Naidenov, unable to find the tab he was looking for a song he wanted to play, decided to write his own and post it online: the site he then founded would become Ultimate Guitar, today one of the largest tab and chord chart databases in the world, which went on to sign the first direct licensing deals with music publishers around the turn of the 2010s rather than keep operating in a legal grey area. This history explains a trait that still persists in tab as found online today: born of community sharing among amateur musicians rather than centralized editorial work, its quality remains uneven from one source to the next.
What a chord chart is, in brief
A chord chart works the opposite way from tab: it says nothing about the physical move to make and focuses entirely on the harmony. It shows chord symbols — a letter in international notation followed, where needed, by a suffix such as m, 7 or sus4 — placed above the lyrics or laid out in boxes each standing for one bar of the song. This deliberate absence of fingering instructions is exactly what makes a chart usable on any harmonic instrument. The same chart can be played on guitar, piano, ukulele or accordion without ever needing to be rewritten: each musician chooses for themselves the shape, inversion or voicing that suits them to sound the requested chord. It's also what makes a chart easy to transpose, as covered in the guide on transposing a song: you just shift every chord name by the same interval, without touching a single fret number, since there isn't one to shift.
There's even a variant of the chord chart that pushes this portability one step further by replacing letters with numbers: the Nashville Number System, developed in the late 1950s by session singer Neal Matthews and then extended to chords and the rhythm section in the early 1960s by session musician Charlie McCoy. The principle is to number each scale degree from 1 to 7 rather than naming chords by letter: the chord built on the tonic is written 1, the one built on the fourth degree is written 4, and so on, with extra symbols to mark a minor chord, a seventh or an inversion. The practical appeal of this system, adopted since by a large share of North American session musicians, especially in country music, is that the same numbered chart stays valid in any key without ever needing to be rewritten: only the reference key changes, never the numbers themselves, which lets a session musician read a song they're encountering for the first time in the studio without yet knowing which key it will finally be sung in.
Head to head: what each notation conveys, what it leaves out
Set side by side, tab and chord chart answer each other almost point for point, each giving exactly what the other withholds. Tab conveys the exact fingering: which string, which fret, in which order, often with the articulation techniques linking the notes together. It lets you reproduce a passage note for note the way one specific musician played it, including their personal choices among several possible positions for the same note. On the other hand, plain-text tab generally gives no reliable rhythm information at all: nothing in a string of numbers says whether these notes each last a quarter note, whether they run together as fast eighth notes, or whether a rest separates one from the next. Some more elaborate formats, such as digital tab files with a synced staff, do add that information, but the vast majority of text tab found online does without it entirely. Nor does tab say which chord is sounding at any given moment, or why one fret was chosen over another equivalent one elsewhere on the neck: it's a notation of movement, not of theory.
A chord chart conveys almost exactly the opposite. It gives the harmony and its structure over time — which chord, for how many bars, with which repeats — which is enough for a musician who already knows the theory to improvise a coherent accompaniment on any instrument. But it says nothing about the position on the neck, nothing about the fingering to use, nothing about the exact shape to fret among all the ones that exist for a given chord. Two guitarists reading the same chart can play the same chord in completely different spots on the neck, with completely different fingerings, without ever betraying the song's harmony — which is exactly the chart's strength, but makes it impossible to learn a specific riff or solo from it alone: it simply doesn't contain that information.
This complementarity explains why the two notations coexist without ever really replacing one another. They don't answer the same question: tab answers "how exactly did this musician play this note", a chart answers "what harmony underpins this song". Trying to learn a song's harmony from tab, or trying to reproduce a specific solo from a chart, means asking each notation for information it was never designed to convey.
Standard notation, the third system: exact rhythm and pitch, at the cost of sheet-music reading
There's a third notation, older and more universal than the previous two: sheet music in standard notation, on a five-line staff. Unlike tab, a note placed on the staff shows a precise pitch — C, D, E... — independent of the instrument and of the position chosen to play it; unlike a chart, every note also carries an exact rhythmic value — whole note, quarter note, eighth note or thirty-second note — placed precisely on a given beat. It's the most complete of the three notations on paper: it captures both exact pitch and exact rhythm, which neither of the other two does on its own.
This completeness comes at a cost: reading a staff requires knowing how to read music, meaning being able to decode the position of each note on the lines and spaces of the staff, recognize rhythmic values and rests, and understand the key signature that fixes the key's sharps or flats. It's a whole skill in its own right, longer to learn than tab or a chart, which explains why sheet music dominates in classical teaching and in settings where the performance must faithfully reproduce a written work, but sees little use for quickly accompanying a pop song or for informally learning an instrument.

None of the three notations is strictly superior to the other two: each strikes a different balance between precision, universality and ease of learning, and the choice depends entirely on what the musician is trying to do with the document in front of them.
When to use which
The choice between these three notations depends above all on the musician's goal, not on a quality ranking between them. Tab suits situations where the goal is reproducing a specific passage, played by someone else, note for note and move for move: learning a riff, an intro, a solo or a bass line exactly as recorded, benefiting from the technique markings that often come with the numbering. It's the notation to reach for when the question is "how exactly did this person play this passage".
A chord chart suits situations where the goal is accompanying or improvising while already knowing the theory: singing while playing along, playing in a band, following a song on piano or ukulele without needing to know which exact shape another musician used on a reference recording. Sheet music, finally, suits situations where the performance must be faithful to a written work down to the smallest rhythmic and melodic detail: classical music, an orchestra, an ensemble where every musician must play a precise part at an exact point in time, or any structured teaching context where reading music is itself part of the learning goal. It's also the only one of the three notations that stays readable without already knowing the song beforehand: a chart or tab often assume you've already heard the song to fill in what they leave unstated, whereas a well-written score is theoretically self-sufficient.
In practice, a versatile musician actually moves between all three depending on the situation: tab to learn a specific passage by ear and by finger, a chart to accompany a new song quickly with a band, sheet music when the rhythmic precision of the written page matters more than anything else.
Limits and pitfalls of tab
Tab remains, all the same, a notation of uneven reliability, for reasons that owe as much to its history as to its format itself. First, the near-total absence of reliable rhythm information in plain-text tab means it never fully replaces listening: without already knowing the song's melody, there's no way to know at what tempo to play the aligned numbers, or exactly where to place each rest. Tab serves as a guide for the fingers, not a substitute for the ear.
Next, a large share of the tab available online today remains the direct legacy of a community tradition born on forums and amateur archives in the 1990s, rather than editorial work verified by professionals. That origin still shows in the very uneven quality from one source to another: two tabs of the same song, published by two different contributors, can offer different positions for the same notes, or even contain outright transcription errors, with no central authority to settle which one is truest to the original recording. Some platforms have since set up systems of so-called "official" tab, verified by publishers, but most of the available corpus is still built on the same collaborative, uneven principle as at the start.
One last pitfall lies in confusing the formats themselves. Because tab sometimes looks, at a quick glance, like a simplified staff, some beginner musicians instinctively look for rhythm information in the numbers that simply isn't there, when it would actually appear on a real score. Knowing in advance what tab can and can't convey avoids this disappointment, and encourages always listening to the reference recording rather than relying solely on the page or the screen.
