The sus4: tension that calls for its own resolution
In a sus4 chord such as Csus4, the third disappears in favour of the perfect fourth above the root: Csus4 is spelled C, F, G, while C major is spelled C, E, G. That fourth takes the exact place of the note that would otherwise say whether the chord is major or minor, and its absence leaves the ear hanging: a sus4 is neither one nor the other, it is suspended between the two.
The word suspended comes straight from classical counterpoint, where a voice holding a note from the previous chord found itself suspended, in dissonance, above the next chord, before stepping back down into its natural place. This technique of a prepared suspension resolved by step is already described by the Venetian theorist Gioseffo Zarlino in his 1558 treatise, before being codified systematically by the Austrian composer Johann Joseph Fux in 1725 in his Gradus ad Parnassum, where it forms the fourth species of counterpoint taught to students. The sus4 of a modern chart borrows the name of this old figure directly, without always following its rules: on a pop or rock chart, the fourth doesn't need to be prepared by the voice leading into it, only the harmonic colour of the chord matters.
What stays true, though, is the resolution move: in the vast majority of cases, a sus4 steps down a whole tone to the third to rejoin the major or minor chord built on the same root. Going from Csus4 to C major, the F falls to E and closes the tension the fourth had opened. This move, often written as the sus4 followed by the plain chord within the same bar, delays a chord's arrival to give it more weight, a figure common in intros or right before a chorus. Unlike the classical suspension, though, nothing stops a modern sus4 from never resolving at all and sitting there for several bars, especially when it's used as a plain rhythmic colour rather than a directed harmonic move.
The sus2: a more open colour, and a naming trap
The sus2 follows the same principle as the sus4 but replaces the third with the major second instead: Csus2 is spelled C, D, G, against C, E, G for C major. That second sits just above the root, the opposite side from the sus4's fourth, which sits just below the fifth: the result sounds more open and airy, without the same pull toward one precise resolution.
This difference in character explains why the sus2 shows up so often in pop and folk: it softens a major or minor chord without announcing an obligatory resolution, and can sit there for several bars without sounding incomplete. Many guitarists use it as an ornament, alternating Csus2 and C major within the same strum, adding motion without really changing chord.
A sus2 is easily mixed up with an add9 chord, and the difference is worth spelling out clearly: an add9 keeps the third and stacks the ninth on top of it, which is nothing more than a second carried up an octave; Cadd9 is spelled C, E, G, D and stays unambiguously major, just with a richer colour. A sus2 removes the third entirely: Csus2 says neither major nor minor, exactly like the sus4. Some charts even label the sus2 as "sus9", a pure octave mix-up between the second and the ninth, a shortcut that invites confusion and is best avoided.
The diminished chord: anatomy of an unstable sound
A diminished chord stacks two minor thirds on top of each other: Cdim is spelled C, E flat, G flat, with a minor third between each note. This construction lowers the fifth by a half step compared to a plain minor chord, creating a diminished fifth between the root and that last note. To the ear, the diminished fifth is the same as the tritone, the interval of three whole tones that splits the octave exactly in half and has remained, since the Middle Ages, one of the most unstable intervals in all of Western harmony. The result sounds tense and immediately wants to move somewhere else.
The diminished chord occurs naturally in every major scale: the seventh degree, the note just below the root, always forms a diminished triad with no alteration needed at all. In C major, the triad built on B gives B, D, F, a pure diminished chord. This instability also makes it an excellent chromatic passing chord: placed between two diatonic chords of a key, for instance between the first and the second degree, a diminished chord built a half step above the first creates a smooth chromatic bass movement that links the two chords without a break, a technique still widely used to thicken an otherwise simple chart.
The history of the diminished chord in Western music follows a clear arc, from shock to cliché. Baroque composers exploit it from the seventeenth century onward for its dramatic potential in opera, where it paints passion, anger, danger or mystery. The French theorist Jean-Philippe Rameau, in his 1722 Treatise on Harmony, is the first to try to rationally explain why this dissonance doesn't offend the ear despite its stack of minor thirds and augmented second, analysing it as a dominant chord whose real root is borrowed from the raised sixth degree of the minor scale. That attempt at explanation marks a turning point: the diminished chord stops being a tolerated exception and becomes a theoretical object in its own right.
The diminished seventh: total symmetry
Stack a third minor third on top of the diminished chord and you get the diminished seventh: Cdim7 is spelled C, E flat, G flat, B double-flat, that last note being heard as an A even though it is theoretically named B double-flat to keep the strict stack of minor thirds. The diminished seventh is a perfectly symmetrical four-note chord: three identical minor thirds stacked one on top of the other, splitting the octave into four rigorously equal parts of three half steps each.
That symmetry has a direct, rather dizzying consequence: any one of the chord's four notes can act as the root, the third, the fifth or the seventh depending on where you analyse it from, and all four inversions sound absolutely identical to the ear. In practice, Cdim7, Ebdim7, Gbdim7 and Adim7 all name, note for note, exactly the same stack of keys on a piano (that last root is theoretically spelled Bbb double-flat to respect the strict stack of minor thirds, but is heard and written almost always as A, far more readable). Across the whole twelve-key system, that leaves only three truly distinct diminished sevenths rather than twelve, conventionally identified by the roots B, D and F. This property makes the diminished seventh a formidably effective modulation pivot: from one single chord played, you can resolve into four different keys depending on which note you choose to treat as the leading tone.
Rameau already analysed the diminished seventh as a borrowed dominant chord, built on the raised sixth degree of the minor scale. Composers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries multiply its dramatic use in opera and stage music, to the point that the surprise wears thin over time: in 1911, in his treatise on harmony Harmonielehre, the Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg observes that the diminished seventh had ended up losing all its edge, fallen, in his words, from the higher sphere of art music down to music for mere entertainment. Today it survives mostly as a chromatic passing chord, a function that jazz, choral repertoire and certain Brazilian popular styles keep exploiting under the name common-tone diminished chord, slipped between two diatonic chords without ever standing as a goal in itself.
The half-diminished chord (m7b5): the softer cousin
The half-diminished chord starts from the same base triad as the diminished, root, minor third, diminished fifth, but replaces the diminished seventh with an ordinary minor seventh: Cm7b5 is spelled C, E flat, G flat, B flat, compared with C, E flat, G flat, B double-flat (heard as A) for Cdim7. The difference comes down to a single half step on the very last note, but it completely changes the character of the chord: the half-diminished sounds darker and more muffled than the full diminished, without the same perfect symmetry or the same sharp instability. It is also written Cø7, the small slashed circle being the specific symbol for the half-diminished, not to be confused with the plain circle that marks the full diminished.
Like the plain diminished, the half-diminished occurs naturally with no alteration at all: it's the seventh chord built on the seventh degree of any major scale. In C major, the seventh built on B gives B, D, F, A, that is, Bm7b5. The same stack of notes shows up, under a different function, on the second degree of the relative natural minor scale, here A minor: the triad B, D, F still forms a diminished chord there, and its seventh chord a half-diminished.
It's exactly this position on the second degree that gives the half-diminished its best-known role: it opens the minor ii-V-i cadence of jazz, where the iim7b5 precedes the dominant chord before resolving onto the minor tonic. The guide on the ii-V-I cadence in jazz covers that move and its major-key version in depth; it's enough to remember here that the half-diminished plays exactly the role a minor seventh chord would play in a major-key cadence, with extra instability that makes the pull toward the dominant even stronger. Historically, the half-diminished takes its time becoming a harmonic colour in its own right: it only becomes genuinely common in the orchestra deep into the nineteenth-century Romantic era, once composers start reaching for richer shades than the plain opposition of major, minor and dominant seventh chords.
The augmented chord: two major thirds, whole-tone symmetry
The augmented chord stacks two major thirds instead: Caug is spelled C, E, G sharp, with a major third between each note. The fifth ends up raised a half step compared to a plain major chord, giving an augmented fifth. Like the diminished seventh, this construction is perfectly symmetrical: this time the octave splits into three equal parts of four half steps each, rather than four parts of three half steps.
That three-way symmetry has the same consequences as the diminished chord's, on a smaller scale: the same chord can be respelled three different ways depending on which note you treat as the root (Caug, Eaug and G#aug all name the same stack of keys), which leaves only four truly distinct augmented chords across the whole twelve-key system, instead of twelve. This division of the octave into equal major thirds is also, exactly, the backbone of the whole-tone scale, a scale built entirely from major seconds that likewise comes in only two truly distinct versions. The first, third and fifth degrees of any whole-tone scale mechanically form an augmented chord: the two objects share the same symmetry and the same lack of a strong tonal anchor.
Unlike the diminished chord, the augmented chord doesn't appear in any major or natural minor scale without altering at least one note. The harmonic minor scale is the exception: its raised leading tone creates a spontaneous augmented chord on the third degree. In A harmonic minor, the triad built on C gives C, E, G sharp, a C augmented chord that comes straight out of the scale with no further alteration. Outside that specific case, the augmented chord stays rare and serves mostly as a short transition or passing colour, for instance to intensify a dominant chord right before it resolves, raising its fifth for a bar before releasing it. As early as the start of the eighteenth century, the boldest chromatic writing already makes occasional use of it, always in passing position, never as a resting chord at the end of a phrase.
Construction compared: the recap table
Lining up all six chords side by side, all built on the same root C, makes their differences immediately readable: each one departs from the plain major or minor chord by only one or two notes shifted a half step, but that shift completely changes the chord's function and tension.

None of these six chords comes out of nowhere, either: most of them show up spontaneously inside a major or minor scale, with no need to force any alteration at all. The table below sums up exactly where to find them, scale by scale.

The symbols themselves are worth fixing once and for all, since they're easy to mix up on a printed or handwritten chart. The plain circle (°) conventionally marks the diminished, whether the bare triad or, followed by a 7, the full diminished seventh; the slashed circle (ø) specifically marks the half-diminished, always as a four-note chord since the half-diminished triad alone doesn't exist as such, it collapses into the plain diminished triad. Plenty of jazz charts simplify anyway by writing m7b5 rather than ø7, more explicit for anyone who hasn't memorised the symbol, while "dim" with no number after it almost always means the bare triad and "dim7" the full seventh chord.
Spotting these chords by ear and on a chart
The sus4 and the sus2 are common: you will run into them regularly in pop, rock or folk charts, often written just before the chord they lead into. The diminished, the half-diminished and the augmented stay rarer in that repertoire, showing up more in jazz, more elaborate songwriting or musical theatre, where the harmonic language explores passing tensions more freely. By ear, the sus4 gives a precise sense of waiting, the sus2 a more neutral openness, the diminished an instability that pushes toward movement, the half-diminished a duller, darker tension, and the augmented an unusual floating feeling unlike anything else.
The simplest way to take in these sounds is to hear them on their own before spotting them inside a song. Common pitfalls to avoid

Why — The two chords look alike by name and by function (replacing the third), but not by the note used: the sus4 replaces it with the perfect fourth, just below the fifth, while the sus2 replaces it with the major second, just above the root. Mixing the two up lands you on the wrong chord, with a completely different colour and resolution tension.
Do this instead : Remember the position cue: the sus4 sits a whole tone above the fifth's neighbour when it hasn't resolved, the sus2 hugs the root from just above. When in doubt on a chart, play both and compare: the sus4 pulls noticeably harder toward a resolution than the sus2 does.
